  • Someone robbed a gun store then got shot dead by police after a chase.

    A statement from police:

Statement attributable to Superintendent Sunny Patel, Auckland City District Commander:

An armed man fleeing from Police has been shot at Sylvia Park Shopping Centre this afternoon.

Earlier this afternoon, at around 2pm, Police received information about a theft of an air rifle at Gun City in Penrose.

The offender has fled in a vehicle and units have been dispatched.

The Police Eagle helicopter deployed to the area and has located the white Suzuki Swift travelling near Sylvia Park.

Eagle has monitored overhead and tracked the vehicle travelling into the Pakuranga area, where it has entered the car park at Pakuranga Plaza.

From there, the vehicle quickly exited onto the Pakuranga Highway and began driving erratically towards Panmure.

Units successfully deployed spikes as the vehicle continued towards Panmure.

The vehicle continued towards the Mount Wellington Highway, still being driven in an erratic manner.

It has become stranded at an intersection outside Sylvia Park Shopping Centre.

At this point, approximately 2.50pm, the offender fled on foot carrying a long-barrelled air rifle.

He has run on foot onto the grounds of the shopping centre.

Units have pursued the offender as he headed towards an entrance into the shopping centre.

Whilst still in possession of the air-rifle, he has been confronted underneath an overpass where he was been shot by Police.

First aid was immediately provided however the offender has been pronounced deceased at the scene.

Police have now stood up a critical incident investigation into the events that have unfolded this afternoon.

Our investigation is still in the very early stages of piecing together all the events.

A cordon has been set up at the scene, and we ask that people avoid the area at this stage.

These events have unfolded very quickly in a busy area, with people shopping at the mall and the afternoon rush hour getting underway.

I can reassure the public that there is no ongoing risk.

Police will provide further information as our enquiries develop.

  • It does all the basics. Can play music via jellyfin, spotify or any of the supported Music Assistant sources (preferably plug in better speakers). Can set timers. I have it announce various reminders (put the recycling/rubbish bin out, etc).

One thing it can do that I don’t think other smart speakers can is proactive things. When the room gets cold, I have it say “It’s getting cold in here, would you like to turn on the heating?”, then it listens for a response and you can reply yes/no.

I’ve also been playing with connecting it with frigate events, such as “I can see Grandma on the doorbell camera”, or “I can see your Ariya on the driveway camera”. That needs some infrastructure though 😅

  • I remember investigating and finding all the problematic IPs had requests evenly spread. Dozens of IPs from China, Singapore, and various South American countries. All of them had approx 80k requests in the period I was looking at, as if they send a few requests with one, then the next, then the next, rotating through then back to the start. Avoids rate limits I guess.

I am considering adding Iocaine as a first line of defence before Anubis, and seeing if that helps

  • The robots.txt if for well behaved bots. I already deployed that list quite some time back but it didn’t help, because the problem are the not well behaved bots.

Iocane should be showing hidden links that only bots can see, and leading then into a maze of gibberish. It has other features too, but the core function is to keep them busy on easy to serve pages that poison their training and are inexpensive for your site to serve (as opposed to the lemmy pages, that have expensive database calls on every page load).

  • However no one who uses adblock should be using Facebook either

If you ask me for help with your computer, whether you’re my mother, mother in law, or uncle, if I had to open your browser at some point then I’m gonna install uBlock Origin. It’s unfortunately the price you have to pay for my help.

What I’m getting at is I’ve installed it on many people’s computers even if they are regular Facebook users.
