6·2 天前Big market, but also huge barrier to entry to get a phone ecosystem off the ground. MS, Amazon, Facebook, Mozilla and many others have tried and failed. Apple and Google have huge moats

That is indeed sometimes the case. Sometimes an object has another purpose. But when I’m watching a cheesy crime movie, if the cinematographer makes a point of showing a close up shot of a weapon, it’s a safe bet that the object is somehow going to figure in the plot. I notice with higher quality mysteries like Knives Out there are a lot of red herrings, not in the typical sense of intentionally misleading us, but trying to show how any crime solving process has dead ends on the pathway to the answer.

5·4 天前It kind of reminds me of the comet from Outer Wilds, which was kinda spooky, in terms of having to land on this tiny object traveling very fast through space and navigate it

6·5 天前For now, you can clear cookies and the pop up goes away. I suspect they will eventually retire the website, as is mostly the case for tiktok, which is pretty much impossible to use on the web. Corporations in general are trying to destroy the web in favor of apps, and consumers have been trained to expect everything to be an app, so there’s a risk that someday browsers as we know them will be a niche web technology.

Not The Onion@lemmy.world•Real estate titan compares 'tax the rich' slogan to racial slursEnglish
6·5 天前The interesting thing is that the media trained us to admire these people, and listen with bated breath to their advice. When in fact they are the last people we should ask for any kind of moral guidance. Their greed has made literally every major societal issue worse. Fortunately, I think that illusion is dissolving, and more and more it’s a majority opinion that the rich are too rich and it needs to stop. Lots of disagreement on how to stop it, unfortunately
Interestingly, The Future is Wild, a speculative evolution show I loved as a kid, features arboreal squid as a future form of intelligent life

Wikipedia@lemmy.world•1970s South Bronx building fires (mass arson campaign, mostly perpetrated by by landlords trying to get rid of unprofitable buildings)English
2·6 天前The first true “headline” of landlords committing arson would likely be the arrest of 8 landlords, detailed in the New York Times in 1975.[31] Among these were the highly-publicized case of Imre Oberlander and Yishai Webber, two Brooklyn-based landlords who were caught driving to one of their buildings whilst wearing blackface, explosives in tow.[32] Critically, none of these landlords were black or Latino. The landlords profited greatly off their insurance policies; Oberlander, for example, had collected $125,000 (over $750,000 in 2026) in payouts from twenty-one separate fires between 1970 and 1975.
It was a slow-motion white collar riot

If he had been just a fuckup, it would be manslaughter. But he knew the lead was harmful and lied to help it become a common additive. That’s what makes him a mass murderer.

I am in a similar boat. I’ve usually bought consoles a few years in when prices were lower. But since they’re higher, I’m just sticking with PS4 and playing through that backlog
