Fediverse@lemmy.zip•Thoughts On The Cost Problem With Fediverse Tik-tok & Youtube Alternatives
1·1 year agoI have a question about this. It’s hard for me to follow because I am not all familiar with it but from how you are describing all the work being done client side, wouldn’t that mean lots more energy use on every computer downloading it instead of at the source? Isn’t that already a problem we face because of bitcoin and AI?

2·1 year agoThank you, that’s far more than I realized went into it but I’m very grateful you wrote it all up for me. I really just learned how to install Linux so maybe getting that pre-made device is my best bet, but I still need to learn more about Linux to begin with. Again, I really appreciate it!

So pretty!
I grew up loving that worm, and now I love moths and creepy crawlies. 😁

0·1 year agoI always thought email was more secure if it was encrypted. I also don’t understand the difference between a virtual fax (sent as a scan, from the computer, via a phone number but literally just some kinda email like thing) or from a low tech low res scan over the phone line that likely is a voip line anyway. I don’t even know the finer details of how those work, but the differences seem pretty minute to someone just staring at the parts.

politics @lemmy.world•Risk of ‘Trumpcession’ rising, economists say, as global markets fall
1·1 year agoThanks for the perspective, I was honestly trying to think in terms of investing overseas, which I should’ve mentioned (Is that even possible?). I’ve been saving, studying, and working on my career to move to teach in Japan eventually and I don’t want what little I currently have to be worth nothing. Right now the dollar is strong against the yen but I don’t know if that’ll be true by the time I graduate (Which is slow, I’m not going to go into debt for this). Considering taking a class on finance even though math is my worst subject.

2·1 year agoThis guy was the real stain on his department, meanwhile you had other feds trying to hold the line against this happening to all of them, while this guy is blindly trusting that he’ll be the exception. Idiot.
So I have an Asus laptop, the Scar model from like 2019 or something I think, and as I want to put Linux on it (haven’t yet), I was researching my options. It’s apparently tricky to do with Asus computers, but I found this site and it might be of help. They also have a Discord. https://asus-linux.org/guides/arch-guide/

PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•Brace yourself for Discord to get worse: Reports swirl that the company is in talks with bankers about opening itself up to shareholdersEnglish
10·1 year agoPrivacy of my data, for one. I’ve had lots of conversations about things like trade and sale of used items, or just plain meetups (they’ve got my address in many PMs with friends). They’ve got my conversations and opinions about TV and viewing habits. They’ve got intimate conversations and vulnerability about mental health. The addition of AI already makes me nervous as F as an artist, and I’ve shared my art on there before. It has data about my gender identity and sexuality in conversations I would never want shareholders, in this political climate, to use against me.
I wish I could wipe all my data from discord, but i doubt deleting it would do that. And I don’t want to lose my communities. I know some of the responsibility is on me for being so open on a communication service, but seriously? When it’s privately owned you at least had some semblance of an idea of what to expect, and it originally was for gamers. That aesthetic, while expanded to every day chat, still had a layer of fun and usability that I am just afraid is going to disappear for whatever shareholders want, and shareholders are many many liabilities wrapped up in ideologies that can be bought.
I’m tired.

13·1 year agoIt really says something about how all over the place OP is that they can’t imagine possibly having a very complex task that takes all your concentration. Any time I try to split my attention between a couple emails or documents, inevitably one gets a little less quality put into it. It depends on what your job is, but it isn’t worth the risk if you risk say, mixing up data from one file in another. You’d say to me then, well, pay more attention! Be more organized! That’s exactly why I know that some items deserve my full attention because I’m prioritizing them.
We used to have so many of them when I was a kid. Their numbers are dwindling. 😭

Uhhh you aren’t the center of the universe, and its incredibly selfish to wish someone not receive a diagnosis that may help them understand the self and navigate the world. That’s what diagnosis did for me. The thing is your autism isn’t the same as my autism nor is it the same as your sister’s hypothetical autism. I get wanting to feel unique but you dont even have to set yourself apart with that, you’re already unique by being you. Instead, why not value what you can share and teach to your sister by giving your perspective, and then listen to hers? That is much more valuable, and if you keep an open mind to her experience(the key point in any interaction) as unique to her as well, I am sure she will value your support.
