Whether it’s jokes about Snap packages or criticism of Canonical’s decisions, mocking Ubuntu often feels like the default attitude in parts of the Linux community.
To be fair, Canonical has made decisions over the years that have not always been well received, and some of the criticisms of Ubuntu and the direction it’s taken have their own merit. Yet, the derisive way Ubuntu is often talked about online isn’t particularly fair and, frankly, misses the point.
I heard that Debian’s release cycle (for packages) is a lot faster now than it was a decade or more ago. Haven’t tested that out myself but the next Linux install I do, whether laptop, desktop, or server, is going to be Debian.
A bit faster to be sure. I’ve used it for over 30 years. These days you tend to be about a year or so behind on anything but bug patches. As opposed to the old 2-3 years. For servers it’s great. For desktops its frustrating a lot of times unless you value stability above all.
