I see a lot of posts about this guy but a quick scroll of his twitter sees him defending Russia and Belerus. Opposing Canada helping Ukraine, etc. Seems like a lot of red flags on this dude.

That may be, but it still doesn’t explain how the cops can charge him with intimidation of cops. Charges like that should only come from a prosecutor.

I agree that there may be a case of cops going beyond the law. I only looked into this since the Canada feed has about 4+ articles talking about this guy with very little details. A 2 second search shows he’s basically a Russian agent.

Sure, I agree. Lemmy.ca has been spammed with articles about this activist though that don’t mention that he’s pro-Russia/Anti-Ukraine. Just thought I’d add some context.

Then cops can recommend charges be laid by the feds.

In no way, shape or form do the cops have any right to charge him with anything at this point.

@Adrius@ttrpg.network Nothing wrong about opposing Canada’s support for Ukraine. Actually, quite a positive point, unless you believe in supporting an extreme Right-Wing Dictatorship. Thanks for bringing that up!

Then cops can charge him with harassing those people. They have zero right to charge him with harassing themselves.

Getting the police involved because someone is annoying on twitter just seems like a bad precedent.

Like if his behaviour actually does constitute harrassment, that’s a concern, but as far as I can see it seems like he’s just loud and opinionated. If you don’t like it, use the block button.

Yeah I’m going to want to hear the other side of the story before drawing any conclusions about whether or not this noted disseminator of Russian-originated disinformation misbehaved badly enough on twitter that he should be arrested for it. I trust that he will get a fair trial.
