Since it has been four weeks since the last general discussion thread, I thought it was time. I started doing general discussion threads over in /c/anime@lemmy.ml and thought I might as well go ahead and do it here too while I am at it.

So, let’s hear it! Any hidden treasures you find? Any dramatic tear-jerkers? Any burning questions for other purveyors of the manga arts?

Like always, make sure to tag your spoilers!

I just started a series called Ri-chan. It’s a pretty simple and relaxing read based on a story setting that I think seems to be popular recently.

On another note, sorry for not posting a new discussion thread for a few weeks. I swear I was actually going to do it this time but @wjs018@lemmy.ml already did the deed so I’ve pinned it for now. Hope you’re all doing well!

I have seen the posts to the sub for Ri-chan from @Rottcodd@lemmy.ninja but haven’t checked it out yet. I am all for more stories centering around adults doing stuff rather than another story taking place in high school. Looking now, it seems like they are very short chapters, so it won’t take too long to catch up.

I have been continuing to try to keep up with new oneshots to share with the community. There have been some good ones I found (and a lot of trash, like a lot a lot). A couple in no particular order:

In ongoing series, I continue to torture myself with Rent a GF and JK Kuzuhana. Two series that should have ended a long time ago and see the author go to great lengths to stretch things out. A step up from those would be Nagatoro and Akutsu which both feel like they have had concrete steps forward lately. In the same vein, Uzaki-chan has been really funny lately as our protagonist struggles against his inner carnal urges like it is Shadow Link or something like that.

@Taos@lemmy.ml @seraph@lemmy.ml @N3DSdude@lemmy.ml any chance of getting this pinned in place of the older thread?

Started reading MARRIAGETOXIN not really a gag manga but I enjoy the hijinks.

Mattaku Saikin no Tantei to Kitara is also an excellent comedy detective manga. Waiting for updates on this one.

Beside this, I started reading Takahashi Rumiko’s Mao it’s like her previous work ( Inu Yasha ) which I enjoyed a lot.

Im also following MarriageToxin. The premise is interesting, altho the battle and abilities seem lacking. I hope they lean harder towards the romcom side going forward.

I’ve been catching up on Yofukashi no Uta and I have to say the series just keeps getting better for me. i’m really glad the author has decided to forego any blue balling on the open issue of their relationship nor drag it out with needless filler.

I wonder if they want to end the series soon or if they start off with a new story arc

I’d really enjoy to see their relationship progress as it’s “official”

Started reading Eden 0 and it’s not as bad as I thought it’d be. I don’t really like fairy tail and it is very similar but the setting is definitely more interesting

Sometimes it’s the little things in the execution of a concept that can make or break a series. Change a plot point here or a character there and the whole thing falls apart. I haven’t read either of those series, but I have read so many series that are superficially similar to each other, but the execution can totally break some while others really shine. It makes me wonder how much of that is the author vs. having a good editor/reviewer. Star Wars was famously terrible in its original cut and then was edited just before release to be the mega-hit that we all know. I sometimes wonder how many terrible manga have ended up on an editor’s desk that then gets polished to the series we all talk about.

Started a number of titles, the three that stood out to me were:

    • Elden Ring - manga that follows the game, but comedy. Definitely recommended if you’ve played the game. And if you haven’t, maybe this will inspire you to try the game.
    • Uglymug, Epic Fighter - started out very strong. The setting is pretty uncommon but enjoyable. I initially thought this is one of those mangas about revenge and characters are mostly assholes, but it is actually quite wholesome. Too bad the ending is lame.
    • Truth Weavers - non-isekai fantasy. I like the pacing thus far; story is moving along nicely and not dragging. The whole thing is pretty grounded, nothing too crazy going on, but its still a good read.

This is the first I have heard of the Elden Ring manga. I am definitely going to be checking that out. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!
