Panzer V, Panzer VI, Panzer VII, Panzer VIII …

    TIL the Panther, Tiger, and Maus are also named the Pz. V, Pz. VI, and Pz. VIII. Never heard of the Panzer VII before, looks weird. Almost like a German IS-2.

      Panzer (or Panzerkampfwagen) is just the German word for tank, so they were basically just numbering the models…

        Well that’s true, but probably a development over the years. The original German meaning of the word Panzer is “armor/armored”.

          Yeah, the shortening to “Panzer” was likely a process, but I would still say it was the name of the category throughout that process. It just seems weird to say that “tank 4” is the dedicated name for a specific model. Technically, you can refer to a specific model that way, but it is still just iteration 4 of a concept.

        Well, yeah. I’m aware. I’ve just never seen them referred to like that, and I do have an interest in tanks so I was surprised.
