Delta Air Lines has agreed to pay $79 million to settle a lawsuit filed in 2020 after one of its airplanes experiencing engine trouble dumped fuel over schoolyards and densely populated neighborhoods east of Los Angeles.
This situation sucks no matter the outcome. The article frames it like the only risk is damage the airline must pay, but that’s not the sole reason. Damage can cause fuel to catch fire and that’s pretty damn bad. In an emergency situation you have to do what you have to do.
I have no idea what the pilot(s) was supposed to do differently in this case.
Just because there wasnt anything else for the Pilot to do, doesnt give Delta immunity for the damage it caused to people who didnt ask to have fuel dumped on them, or even engage in thier service. I’m willing to bet it was costly to remediate jet fuel soaking into your soil.
