China has in recent years arrested and detained Christian leaders of underground churches, who are not registered with the government and under its control.

        If they are underground, it’s because their message is not quite orthodox.
        And China takes a radical, zero tolerance approach to churches since the 2014 Kunming attack (not saying it was better before).
        The idea is they want to avoid a situation like the mosques in France that were used as recruiting grounds for future terrorists.

          Thanks for the context.

          Unfortunately I don’t know enough about the issue to comment on China’s policy, and I know that any information I find (including the article I posted) is going to have gaping plot holes.
