Someone recently posted asking if we had a Matrix room. I used to be opposed to hosting one because moderation can be a bit difficult. The recent Discord issues have shown more interest in Matrix lately so I guess it’s worth experimenting on.

You can join the room #general:ani.social using any existing Matrix account if you already have one. But if you would like to make a new account on the server, you can DM me for a registration code. The room is public so anyone can join.

The server uses Matrix Dendrite which means that there may be some Matrix features that are not available yet.

            I pasted what Cinny client told me before. When I try to join to either of these rooms in Element, I’m seeing this 502 error in the browser console too and it says CORS header 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' missing

              The CORS headers should be there now. I managed to get my account from another homeserver to join. Also, someone else managed to join just fine from another homeserver. Can you try again?

    Any reason why dendrite was chosen? It seems to be no longer in development anymore, I’m not even sure if it’s receiving security patches. Seems like Continuwuity would be a better choice if you want something lightweight

      Honestly, I just wasn’t aware there were other implementations other than Synapse and Dendrite. I feel a bit disappointed in myself if I just installed abandonware lol

        I have been burned by this plenty of times in my self-hosting life. Nothing to be ashamed of. I don’t think there will be any issues migrating at this point so early on.

            Ah, so I was wrong about it not receiving security patches but it does look like the development stopped and I doubt that it will resume anytime soon given the financial woes of Matrix Foundation

              I’m running synapse, but I set it up back when it was the only real option if you wanted feature-completeness.

              Tuwunel is likely what I’d recommend to new admins.

          Yep, Tuwunel or Continuwuity seem to be the only reasonable alternatives to Synapse right now. Both are forks of Conduwuit. Tuwunel is the one that was marked by Conduwuit’s author as THE continuation of Conduwuit, and it has some corporate backing. But apparently Tuwunel’s maintainer is a jerk, and after your standard open-source drama community gathered around Continuwuity instead, and it’s the latter that seems to be recommended everywhere whenever someone asks for a Synapse alternative. Anyway, either of them would be a better choice than dendrite at this point.
