In the same week Hanson refused to apologise for telling Sky News “how can you tell me there are good Muslims?”, 58% of respondents to the Essential poll said they either would vote for One Nation, or were open to voting for them, at the next election due by 2028.
Among all respondents, 25% said they would “definitely” back the rightwing populist party at the next election, with 33% saying they’re “open” to it. Only 28% said they would “never vote for One Nation”, with 14% unsure.
February’s Essential poll finds a substantial number of Labor voters are also open to One Nation.
Among respondents who said they voted for the Coalition, 17% said they would definitely vote One Nation next time, with a startling 51% saying they were open to doing so. Among Labor voters, 12% said they’d definitely vote One Nation, with 33% saying they’d be open to it.
Australians are humans and do human shit. We aren’t actually blessed or geniuses. Just kind of lucky and generally chill. Both can easily change.
Unfortunately reverse our good fortune by increasing wealth inequality and undoing the progress of working Australians pushes people to the angry camp. And the angry camp can spread like a bushfire with influencers, social media companies and old media pouring fuel on it.
It’s not that a peoples party is a bad idea. We had one once called the Australian Labor Party. Born under a tree in Queensland by and for the benefit of hard working Australians. Thanks Queensland. Now they give us Pauline and she is something else entirely. It makes me sad.
I think we should be better. But we are the same as everyone else aren’t we. Muslims, Americans, Chinese. We are all capable of doing bad shit to each other for insane reasons. It has just been our luck that unless you had the misfortune to be born indigenous most of us had it so good we thought we were above a lot of that shit or at least getting better. Hopefully One Nation will self sabotage as they do tend to attract incompetent people. But I thought the same about both Trump administrations and they are still fucking things up.
I find this immensely disappointing
Hanson is a stain on Australia, but like Drumpf is to 'Murica, she’s a symptom of how many hateful ignorant cunts there are here, not a disease in and of herself
I’m still looking forward to reading her obituary.
I think it’s more a symptom of where right wing politics has gotten us. They’re tired of the extremely tired status quo. People’s real wages are going back. People don’t see a real hope of having stable housing.
They’re just being duped into anti-immigration and “small government” (actually the same size government but privatised) being the answer.
The Labor party are centre right. Let’s be clear. And people are choosing One Nation because for some reason socialism is scary.
I think it’s more a symptom of where right wing politics has gotten us.
What gets me is right wingers had their chance to turn out and vote for Dutton a year ago. He is a far more effective politician than Hanson and could have actually formed government instead of just stoke social division and annoy people. He had the nod from Gina and News Corp. Instead everyone seemed to vote for Labor or Teals. What am I missing?
In several states the Liberal party can barely win a seat let alone government. For a country marching to the right doesn’t it seem really odd? Our historically dominant, long governing, conservative party which drew most of the talent on that side of politics struggles. But supposedly we are going to jump right past them to our reject shop version of AfD. How does that work exactly?
Like I feel someone is fucking with us here. I haven’t see skin heads marching down the main street in rural Australia which is as conservative as it gets. No pogroms. No racist graffiti. I would expect ON to do better here than anywhere in my state and in the 2025 federal election they were level with the Greens. Some stuff has changed in a year but not that much. Most shit is basically the same. Cost of living didn’t reverse but it definately stabilized. Have there been riots and the streets burning somewhere else?
If I were to be a bit conspiratorial, perhaps this is just the Murdoch and other corporate media realising the Liberal/National Party brand is dead and are backing a new right-wing horse.
I do agree, it seems very quick, but I suppose a trickle often becomes a flood shrug¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Yes, it’s another reminder of the very widespread underlying racism in this country. If you give Australians a reason to target minority groups under a false premise (housing prices, cost of living, etc), many will happily take you up on it.
Many people follow the crowd and simplistic ideas, including putting blame on others (this does not happen only in Australia). Challenges with simplistic solutions are easier to understand (of course). They also reflect the ideas of people without enough political education who draw skewed conclusions from their personal experience and from their ‘crowd’ mind set. One Nation reflects these prejudices back to people and so they feel listened to, like ON is one of them and not like other politicians which present as removed from everyday reality and from ordinary people. They do not seem to understand (or perhaps want to) that Hanson is hob-knobbing with billionaires and will work in their interest because they will financially support her at election time. We must be aware of this and keep this front of mind with people considering voting for ON.
I wonder how much of this is true and how much of this is massaging the polls for a narrative. The media has tried to spin every election since like 2011 as if it’s going to end up in another hung Parliament. It will be interesting to see how many people actually vote for ON when the time comes
Let’s hear from an actual expert on this topic:
“I think some of the surge in One Nation support is in response to a generic polling question. Many disenchanted voters already have high profile Independent members and candidates in their local seat. It is Independents who are a bigger threat to the Liberal Party, but complex four cornered contests increase the importance of the order candidates finish on primary votes, and affect whose preferences get distributed.”
No, One Nation are in no position to win elections.
People are that Pissed with major parties they are more than willing to vote for Pauline. Really shows how much the parties are failing to read the room.
Are they though? Like organically pissed off and not doom scrolling cooker pissed off?
SA Labor are very much a populist centrist party and pretty much the natural party of government in SA and I will be shocked if they don’t win by a huge margin. Unless the Libs can bring Playford back from the dead to re-nationalise our electricity. Take my vote. Antic and the like have been pushing the Libs to the right and out of contention for years and are doing the same to the federal party.
Not sure about NSW but I get the impression Minns is a populist Labor Right centrist along the lines of Malinauskas. These guys are holding the center of the chess board. They don’t really look threatened.
The only thing controversial about Albo is his ability to avoid controversy. He won by a landslide accompanied by almost the complete destruction of the LNP. What changed?
And if I was pissed off why would I vote for Hanson. She has been a joke for her entire political career. What changed apart from Gina’s money? Something is suss about all these polls and the spin. I guess we will find out on election night.
Yeah, but can voters not find anyone else but ON?
idk, Greens? Independents? Anyone?
The question doesn’t take that into account so one would assume that in some seats there would be a viable independent that some voters (Greens, for example) would be even more open to than One Nation. An interesting point raised in the podcast was that perhaps some Greens voters see themselves as outsiders in the same way as One Nation voters do, and therefore view a party like One Nation as a more viable option than traditional centrist parties that haven’t done shit for anyone other than those on the inside.
There is always a question mark over this stuff until we get close to an actual election, though. Many people are unhappy right now and might just be trying to send a message to the major parties via polls like this. A sort of “do something or else” type response.
Nope, apparently not.
And here’s the direct link to all the data corresponding to the question. 32% of Greens voters were also open to voting for One Nation.
If you’re interested, here’s the corresponding Guardian Essential podcast where they discuss the results and the rationale behind the questions and the phrasing of them.
My gods, just vote independent.
Even if PHON yells some things that resonate with us, I just can’t trust them because of their associates.
Anyone who hangs out with the NRA, Gina and Trump will absolutely not serve my interests.
If PHON is polling well, it’s more likely that they’ve reached a new level of corruption and have been captured by the tech oligarchy.
