The Duellists is a 1978 film based loosely on a true story. Set during the age of Napoleon Bonaparte it follows 2 French officers, d’Hubert (Keith Carradine) and Feraud (Harvey Keitel) who engage in a bitter rivalry spanning years and whose duels never seem to result in satisfaction… Fate sees to it that they are given chance again and again to rectify that.
Known among both fencing aficionados and film buffs alike for its cinematography and white knuckle sword fights, the film also boasts fantastic interior and exterior sets, great costumes, and a memorable melancholic score.
Genre: Historical drama
Rating: PG
Content Warnings: intense sword fights, some realistic blood from wounds (nothing over the top ala Tarantino), some PG-13-tier sexual content, and some frozen corpses during the invasion of Russia.
The lesser sibling of Barry Lyndon but still a fuckin beautiful film
