even when you’re doomscrolling, sometimes…if you think about it, there’s betterment these days in some aspects (not thanks to the reactionaries who want to “go back”)
communication
you can learn more about the world without the need of TV, newspapers or obscure fanzines and pamphlets, and get easily the marxist classics without wasting paper, even you can talk at length with people from others places in the world, now without the need of landlines
knowledge
now you can learn almost everything with an online tutorial, a pc software or just browsing, and you can measure your country against other cultures and know how f-ed you are or what you can improve
health
you can find more treatments for old deadly diseases (despite rfk jr’s best efforts)
quality of life and tolerance
being a minority or lgbt were more dangerous in more places than now, and rightoids usually complain about that
entertainment
now you can find nice music, animation, movies from other cultures and places without an “[insert your country] filter”
well, there’s exceptions like europe not being communist, home appliances under planned obsolescence, movies and shows being openly communist without being labeled as “woke”, but it really makes you think
literally everything except for the economy
telescoping nature of progress vs terminal decline of profit.
I think this is a nice way to look at it. I like to think that humanity is generally competent and ever-improving; of course, capitalism does stall progress and hinders this competency, prime example being not listening to scientists about climate change. But still it does make me hopepilled- I mean, if we got so far with bad/inefficient systems, how much better will we be with the very best one?
