One of the highlights of STLV for me this year. Got a NX-01 assignment patch tattoo at Count’s Tattoo (at the Rio) in honor of my late grandfather who passed in 2025.

EDIT: Included the year.

Really? He did that? OMG. If I had seen him (not sure he was here with Denise this year) and known that, I would have shown him.

We didn’t do many mission-type patches in Star Trek: The Next Generation, mainly because I didn’t want to be in a position where we had to come up with a new badge every time we ran into a new ship. A few years later, when we did Star Trek: Enterprise, the producers wanted a more NASA-like vibe, so I did quite a few emblems for Bob Blackman, our costume designer. Wendy Drapanas, Geoff Mandel, and Alan Kobayashi also contributed some patches.

This listicle says it was Wendy Drapanas but there’s no further explanation.

He was a fan. I remember how excited he was when he’d heard about ENT, telling me “it is set in the time before Kirk” (insert heavy Filipino accent). I grew up wanting to watch Trek because he was. We watched every ENT episode together. As the first series I was old enough to follow long with and understand the stories, it holds a tremendous impact on my childhood.

There are probably those who would say it’s cringe, but it means something to you, and that’s all that matters. Nice tattoo.

Everyone at the con loved it. Not a single negative comment. There was a separate space set up in the convention hall for flash art that worked for Creation (or they are a regular vendor) but I didn’t know about them. Lots got tats there. I wanted it specifically at Count’s plus this was a custom.

There are sizeable number of people who don’t like all kinds of things but I don’t make it a habit of pointing it out when I see someone with those things permanently etched onto their skin.
