For this Friday Movie Night, first up is Vada Chennai (2018), an Indian gangster action epic Director Vetrimaaran also did the revenge thriller Asuran (2019), which we previously watched. A young man who plays a lot of carrom becomes swept into a war between rival gang factions in North Chennai; after the death of a local don leaves a power vacuum that each of them aims to fill. The protagonist spends some time in prison for a minor crime, during which time he ingratiates himself with one of the factions, and rises through the ranks of the gang from there. How high will his gangster career go? I guess we’ll find out, with some over-the-top bloodshed along the way. This is one of the highest-rated Indian films on Letterboxd; it is currently ranked #231 on the Letterboxd Top 500

After that is Our Hospitality (1923), a feature-length silent slapstick comedy from the master himself, Buster Keaton. In this parody of the Hatfield-McCoy feud, Keaton returns to his Southern homestead and falls in love with a woman, only to discover that her family has vowed to kill everyone in his. Hilarity ensues as they try to keep their identities under wraps before the family feud ruins their romance. As usual, Keaton pulls off a whole bunch of acrobatic and death-defying stunts in humorous fashion. This is one of Keaton’s best-regarded works, so let’s give it a shot.
