To be eligible for the lung cancer screening program, Australians must be aged between 50 and 70 and have a significant history of smoking, equivalent to a pack of cigarettes a day for 30 years.

They must also have no signs or symptoms that suggest lung cancer, which kills about 9,000 Australians a year.

The program aims to detect lung cancer at an early, more treatable stage.
