Huh why do the points matter? I’ve never seen it as an actual competition since it spun off. Just watch the comedians be funny ¯\(ツ)/¯
Intellectually I know that the points don’t matter, however, they make the whole game feel more fun. Without them I just… don’t care about the ge as a whole, even if the individual bits are funny by themselves. I could just be watching a compilation on youtube insted then.

Personally I enjoy the low stakes it creates. I don’t think everything has to be a fraught competition. But I’m in the UK and grew up with panel shows (HIGNFY, QI, WILTY, etc) where fake points are the norm - the entertainment is the focus and declaring a winner is basically just a formality.
Maybe it’s a cultural thing?
