I think it’s more of an elitest thing. I’m a boat owner, technically yacht (30 years old). I don’t call it a yacht because it’s a fucking boat, I don’t call it a head, it’s a bathroom.
Another example is it used to be “I go to the gym”. Now it’s like “haha I do CROSSFIT”. It’s the damn gym. Apparently because there’s a couple used tractor tires in there it’s something special is comical.
Calling it a yacht clarifies that it’s a recreational boat, there’s an actual meaning difference. However I agree that it doesn’t matter and nautical English is silly as hell
