It’s Scary time
- Texas Chain Saw Massacre
- The Thing
- Day of the Dead
- Nosferatu (1922)
- Hereditary
Close calls: Near Dark, Cabinet of Dr Califary, Martin, Messiah of Evil, At the Mouth of Madness and Suspiria
five first ones that came to mind:
Exorcist III
Inland Empire
Possession
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Green Room
The Thing is a gimme but imo The Fog is kind of underrated. I’d also forward House of 1000 Corpses, tickled me to discover that the Rob Zombie horror movies are actually pretty good. I have a copy of Three From Hell waiting to be watched… but we all know that films can’t be serious horror. The Void was also pretty okay as well, and it barely counts as horror but Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma rules.
This reminds me that I need to explore more extreme and splatterpunk movies…

I do have more. A quick list anyhow even if I don’t really have a top 5, I rotate on current vibes and don’t really rate what I engage with. I enjoy horror, maybe a bit too much for some.

I won’t repeat the greats that other people mentioned, so:
- Aniara
- Beyond the Black Rainbow
- Viy
- Starry Eyes
- Ginger Snaps
I don’t like spooky movies

I thought of it for my list. I don’t think of myself as a big horror fan but I think it’s being on the farther side of rhe Dunning Kruger effect where everyone ive dated have been MASSIVE horror fans and i’m really into low budget movies and through that process I have seen and am a big fsn of a LOT of horror movies and know a about the genre. I generally consider sci fi to be my home turf for genre fiction, but I am a huge horror nerd. I’m watching Giallo movies for this october now that ive finished all the Romero horror movies. Martin is still his best. Day of the Dead remains on my top 5 regardless.
Also as a sci fi dork, I mentally put event horizon in that category, same with Alien even though either are equally apt
Sam Neill made a big impression on me in this movie
I loved this movie.
Where we’re going, we won’t need eyes to see
breaking the rules and posting my some of my recent favoritts
Cure forgot that this technically counts as a horror movie. COOL as hell
Lets Scare Jessica To Death is my new favorite horror movie
Best Wishes To All was pretty interesting anti capitalist movie
The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster cool and interesting
Tetsuo : The Iron Man left an impression and is artistically cool. The lady in the movie actually designed a lot of the stuff I think (if im remembering correctly)
The Vanishing (1988) actually scared the fuck out of me because it was so relevant somehow
honorable mentions I forgot about: Hokum, Frewaka, Exhuma, Hour Of The Wolf
but historically my favorite has been the ju-on series.
I watched Tetsuo back in the 1900s and I still think about it sometimes, it’s a very compelling bit of film
Mine’s honestly a pretty basic list.
In no particular order:
-
The Thing
-
Nightmare on Elm Street (original, remake sucks)
-
Videodrome
-
Session 9
-
Pulse (original film, not the American remake)
Honourable mentions: Alien, Xistence, Jacob’s Ladder, Skinamarink, People Under the Stairs, From Beyond, Event Horizon, Black Christmas (original), Dark Water (original film, not the American remake).
I should have put Alien in mine. I usually categorize it mentally as sci fi, butnits an equal share
-
The Thing
Annihilation
Braindead/Dead-Alive
Dawn of the Dead (original. Remake is fine enough)
28 Years Later
From the top of my head, in no particular order
I jusr rewarched Romeros dead trilogy. Night went up in my esteem, Day went a bit down. It’s mostly the music. Zombi the Italian film is basically a different edit of the movie with a more srs tone by just a bit and ive come to prefer it
Videodrome
Re-Animator
From Beyond
Lifeforce
TerrorVision
You have great taste
Thank you! I like my horror sleazy, my sleaze goopy, and my goop horrifying.
- Tucker and Dale vs Evil
- The Others
- The Thing
- Halloween (1978)
- Weapons
In no particular order. Just stuff that I’ve either rewatched a lot or left a strong response after viewing.

Im not big into horror but I have enjoyed the occasional horror movie and I do think its fun gerne to watch together with people.
EDIT
I did watch Nosferatu (2024) and had fun with that. Oh I also like del Toros Frankenstein from (2025) not like top of my list …just recent horror I watched.
Special shoutout to the MIST loved that flick
Those are fantastic choices and great with friends watches.
If I watch horror movies alone I just get scared :3
But when I watch them together with folks its fun to talk about the movies afterwards.
The ones I like watching alone are generally less straightforward stuff. I’m doing Italian horror this week for October, you may like Argentio and Fulci they have a cool dreamlike atmosphere. The really old Paramount classics like Dracula and Feankenstein have a neat Gothic vibe. The og silent Nosferatu is amazing. Cabinet of Dr Caligary is the basis of Tim Burton’s career. Not all horror movies are scary scary, some are just like, spooky mood
I know these 3 are guaranteed to be a part of my favorites:
The Thing
Alien
The Mist
Obsession should probably be on my list. I haven’t enjoyed a horror movie like that in a long time.
After that it’s such a toss up. I need to rewatch some of these:
The Ritual
Cabin in the Woods
Trick or Treat
Cloverfield
REC
28 Days Later
Oculus
The Descent
Evil Dead 2013
I haven’t seen Cloverfield since I saw it in theaters. Mostly cause the memory of seeing it in theaters was do dsmn good that I kinda just wanna keep it that way
Oh I forgot about the MIST that was a great but dark movie. LOVED the setting and world in that one.
I feel like horror is one of these gernes where it really pays off to go in as blind as possible.
Oh, 100%. Knowing the twist or even a couple of scenes a head of time can spoil the fun. Even rewatching a horror film can have that same effect.
I find campy horror like Evil Dead, Shaun of the Dead, and Slither are the exception
