I am collecting pins from socialist countries old and new. And as I looked at this pin it looked newer and cheaper than my other pins. Does anyone know if it might be original as well?

This is a cheap replica officers cap badge sold to tourists for a dollar or so in most Post-Soviet countries. Massed produced tourist memorabilia essentially.

An original would be substantially more faded, and more importantly would not use a butterfly clasp. Soviet awards did not use butterfly clasps as that is primarily an American method of securing awards. The Soviet award uses a flat, long pin design.

The backing is all wrong as well. The star should not be soldered to the laurels, and there should not be a stamp metal triangle.

  • This one isn’t original. I got one in Armenia for cheap along with a bunch of original pins that cost much more. The original ones are usually flat on the back and have an attachment that looks kind of like a soldered safety pin that’s often a bit bent from wear and tear.

Pins like these tend to have the surface flat on the back and the clasp is usually way more similar to a sondered flat safety pin.
