I have been trying to start my own FIRE blog.
Already got the domain, but I was going to use the email for another project. I’d been requesting a public record from a disposable (public) email address and the email messages keep getting deleted. What’s strange is this kept happening on a new email. So I’m thinking the City did it. Thinking of using that blog email for a request, so I can catch them doing it on a dummy site.
I’ve been using Profit First for a year and it’s been great. Highly recommend it if you have a business or do freelance. Even for regular work I think it’s great. I learned about it in Finance for the People which is another great book.
I personally prefer knowledge over capital. So I was realizing a blog would be the best way to showcase that if my consulting grows. Also planning a news offshoot site. There are stories the news doesn’t cover and I was pulling public records and doing data analysis on them and realized other people might have deeper stories.
I got one related to towed vehicles and City Insurance Pools (nationwide). Then a new one related to Crypto since my State began taking crypto from Coinbase accounts sometime recently. Each story is done completely. If you’re familiar with Thinking in Systems, these stories don’t have the usual boundaries. The gap I wanted to fill was lawyers and journalists saying things weren’t related, when I was finding these things are very related. I don’t think they realize they are making systems collide by ignoring them in mass.
I think there are easy problems to showcase and even solve that would make FIRE easier for everyone.
This month is Huntober for 100Devs.
I’m studying and seeing if I have a 100 hours project for some of these coffee chats. Looking to get a Senior Software Engineer position around March 2027.
Here are the approaches I utilize the most.

Alongside Weekly Finance Time from Finance for the People and the spending plan.
This High Agency read is pretty good too. A Huntober homework assignment.
I look at this calculator pretty often while daydreaming about coasting vs full FIRE:
https://walletburst.com/tools/coast-fire-calc/
The MMM savings rate one seems like it makes sense when you’re just starting, but breaks down if you already have a decent nest egg.
It sounds like percolation. I’ve heard of coast fire, but I thought it was something coastal 😂. Like it began in Seattle or San Francisco. I have it and another version of FIRE to look into on my pkm.
What do you mean it breaks down?
What do you mean by percolation?
“Coast FIRE” is when you have enough invested that compound interest alone will carry you to FIRE without more contributions. Then you can take a lower paying job that just covers living expenses.
When I say the MMM chart breaks down:
Showing someone who hasn’t thought seriously about retirement the savings rate vs working years chart and a compound interest calculator can seriously change the way they think. It’s a great starting point. I’ve done that for several early career engineers.
But, like that MMM article says, that chart’s only accurate if you’re starting from 0 net worth. It isn’t really worth checking once you’re already on your way. 50% savings rate has different years remaining for 0x, 10x, or 20x annual expenses invested.
