this is soul crushing. greed ruins everything.
Are we going to soon find out exactly how secure data centres are? With lots expensive computer hardware and i assume not many staff.
Fuck you too, Lisa.
Good thing I’ll be getting my next GPU from ebay
I don’t know what ya’ll are complaining about. Gaming will move this direction anyway as gaming is droplets of piss in the computing budget world.
Stadia was just too early.
The next hardware manufacturer saying “Actually, we do GPUs for gaming” will be King/Queen of the world.
Also “Luigi, we need you so bad.”
that manufacturer would have a fraction of the sales. They’re all doing this because data centers buy way contracts are simply more lucrative; the planned rollout of data centers means they’ll sell so much more that they simply can’t accommodate enthusiasts and home builds
This is of course the goal of people like Altman and bezos, they want to hoard compute after hoarding 99+% of all the wealth amongst like 50 people. This is why resistance to data center rollouts is so important and to a further step fair distribution of resources as a political platform. This mess wouldn’t exist if oligarchs were reigned in
Oh boy, so we really need to guillotine those billionaires and CEOs then bathe, dance and fuck in their blood ASAP.
Maybe not that last verb, I think that’s how you get more scrappy CEOs.
Oh, yeah, it was just a flourish to achieve that “blood orgy from hell” vibe. Fucking in someone else’s blood is unsanitary, especially in that filthy billionaires’ blood.
Not gonna happen any time soon. The barrier of entry is massive.
Making decent drivers alone is a humongous undertaking: You have to catch up to the work of several decades - and it’s a moving target. That’s on top of just how difficult it is to design good silicon. Just look at how Chinese GPU manufacturers are struggling to match low-end cards from 10 years ago (even though they are lying and claiming they are matching high-end cards from one generation ago) with cards that have many times the power draw and cost - and all of that with far worse games compatibility.
Hell, even the giant that is (soon to be probably: was) Intel failed to leave a mark in the dedicated GPU business and they actually have decades of experience making (pretty shitty) integrated GPUs and (even shittier) drivers for them.
Somebody bring back Matrox or Cirrus Logic, please.
She’s right though. Look at their revenue. Data centers are 10x their gaming division.
Gaming pulls in less than 1B profit a year. An absolute drip compared to their Datacenter business.
I’m surprised they bother with gaming at all once you realize what a side project it basically is for them in terms of revenue.
remember she is related to Huang, by cousin.
Wut? Wait. The AMD CEO is the cousin of the nvidia CEO? Like, the CEO of the number two GPU chip company is cousin of the number one company y, and effectively there isn’t really a number three so this GPU market really is really a family monopoly?
It’s pretty f. weird that Lisa Su is the CEO despite being so closely related to Jensen, I would dislike this if I were an AMD investor. However this is not a family monopoly, since neither Su or Jensen own these companies, not substantially anyway. (well below 1% & 3 something % owned respectively) Meaning of shareholders at large disliked Lisa Su’s way of doing things, she would be booted without too many hurdles I would think & the same is true for Jensen.
The fishy part for me is that they’re both from Taiwan, and they’re both in charge of companies that are some of the biggest customers of TSMC, Taiwan’s biggest chip fab that practically has a worldwide monopoly on high-end chip manufacturing. There’s also the national security angle here, with TSMC probably being the only reason China hasn’t invaded, as the entire world would have something to say about it.
Idk, there’s a lot of fertile ground for conspiracy theories under these Taiwanese billionaires.
Welcome to late stage capitalism! Market fundamentalism was always a lie, the american dream has been dead for over a century.
Both are from Taiwan though.
I wonder why that matters, most oligarchs are from a diaspora.
Good to know. You stand by that, yes?
What a cunt.
At this point, we’re gonna need Valve to get into the GPU business or else PC gaming is going to collapse
Monopolies got us to this point. Another monopoly isn’t going to save us.
The solution is politics, regulations, and enforcement. These companies are breaking laws, and have even been found to do so in court (see how many times Google has been found to be a monopoly, for example). The problem is spineless and/or corrupt judges and politicians not doing anything about it.
But just a few weeks ago, MAGA seemed unstoppable, and today it’s completely dead. There are still corrupt dems in power though, and they’re going to try to steer us towards the same do-nothing equilibrium of before, so we gotta keep the pressure up. This is a great time to write to your elected officials, especially the ones who weren’t up for reelection this cycle.
Once I tried to design my own open-source GPU architecture.
BTW if anyone wants to reuse the name “VideoDSP” for the shader cores, then feel free to do it.
Not really. With AAA maybe, but there are millions of great games out there that run on basically phone hardware. And with valve creating a translation layer for x86 to arm, all of them are basically in reach.
I don’t suppose there’s a way for someone to get inside AMD and irritate its innards in a way that will maake it hork ATI back up, is there?
As if ATI would have been any better if they still existed
Companies are companies are companies. They don’t exist to serve you, they serve capital
Only one way to find out
This just in - more CEOs shitting all over everything that was once nice.
We are a tulip first investment firm
popcorn futures too.
A+ historical reference
I’m sorry to break this, but would love someone to educate me here, pretty please!
First ‘stock’ market bubble and crash was in tulip bulbs.
And it was far earlier than you would imagine. And far dumber.
I’ve got some south seas islands you can plant them on…
