Upgrading your weapon level is usually a better option unless there’s a really good universal upgrade like pickup radius. Your weapons get a lot stronger at certain upgrade levels.

You’ll also get more weapon options as your character level up. The first few runs are definitely quite difficult. Especially until you learn how to dig your way as a fleeing mechanism.
