Screen time at age 1 is linked with higher risks of developmental delays in toddlerhood, a new study has found.

In the latest research, mothers of children with high levels of screen time were more likely to be younger, have never given birth before, have a lower household income, have a lower education level and have postpartum depression.

This paragraph highlights another factor in developmental delay - non-present parents (or other caregivers).

Poverty. It’s poverty. It basically always comes down to poverty.

Those who had spent four or more hours with screens were 4.78 times more likely to have underdeveloped communication skills, 1.74 times more likely to have subpar fine motor skills and two times more likely to have underdeveloped personal and social skills by age 2. By age 4, risk remained only in the communication and problem-solving categories.

Alright, a one year old spending 4+ hours a day on a tablet isn’t being taken care of properly.

It has been linked to developmental delay in multiple studies for many years now.

Yeah no shit. You mean to tell me parents should actually do parenting instead of tossing an iPad at their kid? Ridiculous. They often expect the internet and their devices to do the heavy lifting. I would say teenagers are affected too, since the brain is not yet fully developed until early 20s but they got unlimited screentime, unsupervised. There should be a healthy balance between digital access and everyday tasks, but unfortunately people either don’t want to deal with parenting, or they go overboard and get on that power trip. Respect and nurture your children in the right way so they can have a bright future, and less mental health problems.
