I’m genuinely curious why anyone cares about an Assassin’s Creed game in 2024. The series has been absolute dog-water for over a decade and a half. When was the last decent one? “Black Flag”? “Brotherhood”? Sure it’s fun to see CHUDs be CHUDs, but I’m really surprised anyone even remotely cares about this series. What even is an Assassin’s Creed at this point? They are creatively vapid beyond recognition.

When was the last decent one?

Confusingly it’s Unity, the closest the series ever came to delivering on its initial concept, which every other game just ignores.

Literally everyone forgets Syndicate, follow up to unity. I thought it was fantastic.

I couldn’t get through Unity. The gameplay didn’t really grip me, then again the gameplay loop has been flat since 3. Not “bad” exactly but very much flat. The characters were all pretty forgettable, I felt like assassin’s really jumped the shark with the “genetic memory” gimmick in the first game. It properly would have been a great or narrative tool in the third game or something. I’m not even being cynical or hater (though being a hater is a lot of fun), it just felt Assassin’s Creed has always been a cool premise with very mediocre games.

I will say the world design of Versailles felt really good and rich. Then again, for me I find Assassin’s Creed works really well for the first 2-10 hours and after that it’s charm quickly depletes.

I mean it’s never been good, but Unity gives the most direct and logical control over vertical traversal, ejects, stuff like that. Compared to the bizarre timing based stuff and secret button prompts in AC1 it’s a solid climbing system. Combat is vicious and should be avoided, the scale and detail of the city is staggering, crowd stealth mechanics actually work, crouching makes stealth actually viable. I stealthed tons of missions in it, the story is whatever but has always been.

I am a hater and AC was never good, it was always a dogshit non-replacement for Prince of Persia and AC1 is an intolerable game. The climbing works okay once you understand it (which the game never really teaches you, just tells you to hold RT) and the combat is entirely braindead. Mission structure sucks and is extremely repetitive even on PC, the whole game is trash and AC2 weirdly made it even worse. Unity’s assassination missions are rad though, it’s finally the historical Hitman Blood Money we were always promised, killing your mark without being noticed and slipping out feels SO FUCKIN GOOD panting

It is also a great concept totally wasted on bullshit games. How did they manage to make it so non cool??

Shame I didn’t get through it enough, I love the Hitman games and sense building tension of Hitman always hits the mark for me. A period piece Hitman is kinda all I have ever wanted from the AC titles, there are little hints here and there of it but never really deliver on that promise.

Agent 47’s game when done well really highlight the fun of building tension and the joy of setting things in place. That’s always been the fun for me in a Hitman game, is not just solving the puzzle of the “hit” but the act of setting the puzzle’s solution on to the board and seeing it all come together. The plot never did it for me, i kinda saw what they were going for, but it never hit the mark for me. Luckily the pure mechanics of a good Hitman game really carry the experience for me every time.

The climbing works okay once you understand it (which the game never really teaches you, just tells you to hold RT) and the combat is entirely braindead.

That’s what killed it for me most of the time, the act of moving around always felt kinda neat and dynamic but fightin’ dude was just “What if Batman Arkham-style combat but worse in every way? What if we made being a cool super assassin lame as hell?”

It is also a great concept totally wasted on bullshit games. How did they manage to make it so non cool??

            Agreed!

unity played good but i was still mad about them just abandoning the modern day story and then at the end of unity you find out the thing you were looking for with your shitty hacker collective wasn’t even there in the past so the whole game was pointless.

No one cares about it except the average consumer and reactionaries. Fascists will make a million soyjak memes but they have a deeper understanding of all the lore from popular products and IPs out there than the average fan

If the Japanese game has a protagonist who is Japanese, then maybe it’s that White Nationalist slogan of “Germany for the Germans”, “Japan for the Japanese”, and so on? That typical anti-internationalist, anti-miscegenation position.

I think there’s some nonsense going around that, I don’t know, “Big Woke”? doesn’t like Japan because Japanese developers are still based and boob-pilled. I mean it’s confused and asinine and a game of loosely associating whatever shit is in front of you, but I think that’s the underlying stuff. They won’t let you play as a Japanese man because Japan isn’t woke enough, which makes them racist and hypocrites. If I had to guess why they can rationalize being able to play as Norse, for instance, which probably isn’t woke, it’s probably because Japanese vs. Western devs is a sort of current issue for these gamergooners, so the choice to make the protagonist a Black man instead of Japanese can be contextualized into this ongoing struggle. Which is like, double fucking nonsense because the decision was probably made years ago.

I honestly think the simplest answer if he’s doing what right wingers do sometimes which is appropriate a common left critique of the right but without any of its context that makes it make sense bc they’re baby brained dipshits that can’t understand they’re trying to force a square peg in a round hole. I see them do it all the time

I don’t think he’s even the main character. The main character is the female ninja which gamers seem to also foam at the mouth. But I guess ninjas are historically accurate now. If you look in the trailer comments, you’ll see a bunch of losers who are declaring their courageous refusal to pre order a shitty game because of muh diversity

I’m curious if anyone’s ever studied the weird Madonna-whore complex that gamers have. I don’t even know if you can classify it as that, because MWC usually involves putting someone on a pedestal but gamers will freak out about one game not having hot girls then in the very next game decry the game for having hot girls. I don’t get it.

It needs to be hot girls that in no way represent a “challenge” to the supremacy of male characters. If a role is historically male, even a waifu in that position is a feminist plot to castrate the western man.
