Back when I joined lemmy.ca, the front page was full of bicycles, city/province-specific community posts, and others like woodworking This morning, four or five of the front page posts were making fun of some crazy bikini lady(?). I read their “read this first” post and understand why they’re doing what they’re doing, but is there a way to get our default front page to be a bit more…friendly and community-oriented?

    The personal fix is to block that community, or set up such that you see subscribed communities by default.

    The broader fix would be made to Lemmy itself, and I’m not sure anything like that exists. It would require the same concept as a “default subreddit”, which I’m pretty sure Reddit built as a checkbox their admins can control as to whether a community shows up if you’re not logged in.

    Lemmy is still going through growing pains and doesn’t have a large user base yet, so I wouldn’t be surprised if a feature like that doesn’t show up for a long time. We’re probably on our own until then.

      It’d be nice if a feature like this got fast-tracked, because I see this a notable limitation to the Lemmy platform. As an instance, growing in size and maintaining an identity/brand butt heads. Ideally, you’d host whatever people want to contribute that is legal and cool, but you might also want to highlight certain content. “Local - hosted” and “Local - favourites” feeds, or something like that, might work

    I saw that community once when it was first created. Baffling there is so much traffic there now. Anyway, blocked it, problem solved.

    I feel the same way. For me it feels odd having helldivers2 as one of the main posts showing up. I do not understand why this would be a default for lemmy.ca

      Both Helldivers2 and PCGaming are quite popular communities, and both just happen to be hoasted on lemmy,ca.

      The only recommendation methods right now ate various forms of popularity; there isn’t any curation beyond you blocking communities and using the subscribed feed.

    One thing about it is that there’s a lot more traffic. I used to browse “all” new posts, just in the hopes of seeing something new - a new post or some discussion on…something.

    Lemmy traffic is steadily increasing; and I suspect the community stuff is not growing as quickly. That’s not the only reason, but that’s part of it I’m sure.

    I agree. I haven’t posted much to my local subs these days.

    The way to get your feed feeling more how you want is either to block communities you don’t like, or subscribe only to communities you like.

    The communities are patchwork and so the growth rate is not uniform, the TPBS group are recent Reddit refugees that migrated over all together which is why they are a bit of an outsize group on our small and humble server.

    I agree that a default/local feature set would be great, I’ve been talking about community groups (multicommunities, tags, whatever) should be a thing for months, things that would make it a little easier for users and server admins to curate the experience, because I admit it the feed can feel a bit chaotic when not logged in.

    I’m on Lemmy.world and I get those posts every day as if I had asked for them lol I know the info page makes sense of it but it still seems very mean spirited so I just blocked that community now…

    Compared to other social media sites, lemmy doesn’t curate/manipulate in the “feed”. This is both good and bad. Because .ca isn’t just Canadians, but every instance we are linked to, whatever communities from here that get a little traction globally will poison the feed.

    It order to fix that, .ca would need to limit what kinds of communities can be made on this instance. They do this with the no porn/bigotry rule, but that’s still not very specific. There is also the issue of a small number of people on the platform creating 50+ communities, not doing anything with them, not even making a single post. This poisons looking for new communities.
    They could decide to change the rules and remove a bunch of communities, but I assume the admins discussed this, coming to the conclusion that it would drive a large amount of people away.
