Spain@europe.pub•Spain hits back at Pavel Durov over mass Telegram post on social media ban planEnglish
3·1 day ago30 years ago people were assuming the government is wiretapping their phones. Now you’re here begging the government to wiretap the internet because “we need to protect kids”. Sure thing, buddy, this is going to all work out just fine. It’s not like we’re seeing in real time what governments are doing with people who disagree with them and just how much they want something like Palantir to control and cut down all “dissent”. But hey, at least kids won’t see some scary videos. Oh, you won’t see the videos of police beating up immigrants or protestors, but who cares, right? Kids will be safe!

2·2 days agoAmazing how “think of the children” became so prevalent these past few months when we’ve had all these ongoing attacks on online privacy by governments. We used to laugh at the government when they used this argument, now I see people willingly use it to argue for forced digital identity.

17·4 days agoI’ve been using a dongle with my phone for almost two years. Now, every time I charge it, I have to find a “sweet spot” where it actually works and be careful not to move the cable around or it’ll stop charging.

3·4 days agoAt the end of the day, Nobara is pretty much a one-man hobby project. Sure, there is a small community around it nowadays but even then, if the main developer decides to drop it, they’d have hard time keeping up. That’s why I’m usually hesitant to recommend these types of distributions and I’d rather recommend something tried and tested with a big community build over many years.

43·4 days agoIt’s yet another step in the worrying trend of tearing down the current update system on Android. It feels like Google is cutting down everything else just so they can put more resources into AI.

Games@lemmy.world•Games you really want to play, but can't or won't?English
6·7 days agoA lot of soulslike games. I’m terrible with a controller for anything that is not in 2D. I tried Dark Souls 1. Managed to kill Gargoyles, ventured into Darkroot Basin and got filtered. Ents taking 80% of my HP on hit was pretty frustrating too.

Patient Gamers@sh.itjust.works•Weekly Recommendations Thread: What are you playing this week?English
2·7 days agoCurrently going through Warhammer 40K: Inquisitor - Martyr. The game itself is pretty basic, there is honestly not that much variation for skills or builds, the maps are pretty repeatable outside of main storyline and performance is terrible. Still, it scratches that itch that I’ve had for the past few weeks for a hack and slash game. And smashing into a horde of Tyranids with a big hammer is pretty satisfying.

Games@lemmy.world•Why is Valve being sued for almost $900 million, but Epic Games wasn't sued when they bought Rocket League and Fall Guys to remove them from steam?English
98·7 days agoIs Steam the “good guy” in all this? Of course not.
Too bad a lot of people, even here or in other threads, don’t get it, so they willingly cheer for Valve simply because Tim Sweeney sucks.

32·8 days agoI’m honestly not sure whether it’s some huge astroturfing campaing or just people simply sucking off billionaires for no reason, but every time we see ANY criticism towards Valve or Gaben, most of the commenters flock in support of Valve. Underage gambling? Oh, who cares. Lootboxes? Well, that’s okay. Taking 30% cut for games? Uh, actually, that’s not a lot! Gaben owning a ton of yachts? Well, he’s a good guy, so it’s fine. And when Valve got forced by Australian court to create a refund policy, I saw a TON of comments saying it was actually wholesome valve who voluntarily decided to create it. But apparently they get a pass because they’re smart enough to invest in a backup solution (Linux) in case Microsoft fucks them over.

31·8 days agoHey, we don’t talk about that here! Gaben is wholesome and even though he is a billionaire who owns a yacht company funded by lootboxes, he’s one of the good ones!

Android@lemdro.id•Motorola is getting away with zero OS updates thanks to regulatory loopholeEnglish
82·8 days agoI see a lot of comments saying that it’s a good thing but I feel like people needlessly hate new OS versions because of Windows versions and extrapolate it to Android too. Meanwhile, every new Android release is bringing a lot of great features, improving both privacy and security. Just to mention a few, we got:
-Private space
-better permission control
-Granular permissions for photo/video access in apps
-background apps restrictions
-a toggle to disable 2G
And probably a lot more.
