  • You should always have - if possible of course - at least weeks of rice and beans, a water filter (they cost like 30$ for thousands of gallons of good filtering), knowledge of the nearest source of water, cash available on hand. If you can, also, some solar energy and a battery with it. And if in the US (I’m not) I guess a gun. And testing all that beforehand and being familiar with their use is important too (except perhaps the water filter - they’re simple to use and last much less longer in storage if used even once, due to the residual water).

While I despise traditional preppers - mostly for their individualism, the best prepping is community - we’re entering a planetary cool zone IMO and the basic minimum above is always a good idea if you can afford it. During shit like Katrina or even that recent power outage in Spain, the above is useful. And these events will become more and more common. It’s also usually part of the governmental recommendations even in imperial countries, it’s just rarely communicated on.

  • Thank you for answering. I guess the main difference is perhaps the rational behind it; seems mainly environmental for you; you even mention the survival of our species. While I appreciate greatly the impact veganism has on my carbon footprint, it has never been the trigger for it. It’s the animals.

For example the term “animal welfare”, like we should take better care of them while exploiting them, but all animal exploitation (outside of, perhaps, survival contexts) is wrong, period. It’s not about larger cages or better conditions for animals - it’s about them not being used by humans at all. And it goes beyond food, which your comment goes in depth about; it’s no leather, no cosmetics tested on animals (even if they don’t include animal products themselves), etc.

Also I’m sorry if that part of my comment read as aggressive; I was genuinely curious. But also please think of the animals - watch Dominion maybe (except I tend to agree with other commenters what you described sounds like depression or burnout, so maybe not the best time); not exploiting them and trying to convince other people of doing the same is literally being the voice of the voiceless. They cannot speak. They are objects to the vast majority of people. Yet despite all the carnist normalization and propaganda they are sentient beings - capable of feeling, loving, enjoying life, and they’re being tortured in ways worse than most people realize (or want to know, really). And every time one buys leather, or flesh, it means participating in this.

  • Is mental stagnation and unhealthy habit forming just part of turning 30

No. If anything I think I’m stagnating less in my 30s than I did before; same for the unhealthy habits. I sometimes wonder how much of that is due to my regular psychedelics use, mind you. In fact I hesitate to suggest it but if you have no counter indication at all exploring such a use yourself (if you never did) might be valuable.

I work 10 hour days and then I’m too exhausted to eat healthy

I prepare gigantic meals on Sundays that last me and my partner all week. Even if you like diversity during the week this isn’t necessarily a problem if you have freezer space (I don’t): make several such gigantic meals and freeze it all in portions; unfreeze what you need/feel like eating when needed.

This is both better for your health (including your mental health), and the environment. Got to like cooking though.

I used to be vegan, and I still think vegans are basically correct, but I no longer have self-discipline.

This is genuinely weird to me. Been vegan for close to a decade and it doesn’t take discipline at all to not consume animal products (well it did for perhaps the first initial six months I’d say); it doesn’t even register as food anymore - pure disgust. This includes smells of cadaver parts being cooked that I remember I thought attractive before switching. Didn’t you get disgusted by cooked flesh after a few months ? I assumed this was universal (it certainly happened to my partner as well, switched together).

It does take incredible discipline to be around people that do consume them, though; seeing people you sometimes appreciate actively participating in the greatest act of continuous, industrialized exploitation, torture and murder in the history of the planet is depressing.

  • She means it’s hosted in France

And I’d worry more about them dumping and analyzing comments from here directly through scraping, without ever having to seize the hardware, and trying to identify users through cross matches with other sources

US users should be particularly careful with OPSEC these days

And while hexbear is pretty low profile, it’s not that crazy: there was already a contractor scrapping comments massively from hexbear in the past to “analyze trends in extremist discourse” or some such. I remember they even complained in their report because admins had temporarily limited the history length you could consult, resulting in a limited dataset for the contractor in question.

Also we’re federated; even if hexbear had perfect security and so on, other instances have most of the content. Again, back to OPSEC. Can’t scrap / exploit data that doesn’t exist.

  • It very likely is the death blow for oil. I am also deeply convinced it comes too late for much of us; much of the science that predicted the effects of climate change was based on models, not historical data (admittedly due to there being no historical precedent of course); models that were consistently ignoring unquantifiable second-order effects from the increasingly changed climate - some of them diminishing the effect, a majority of them increasing it.

And much of the scenarii - often very optimistic in general, both due to being based on years-old science when published and due to fear of being called an alarmist - from the IPCC also rely on mass carbon-removal at scale, something that has never been demonstrated as either possible or implementable in our current economic system.

And I would add: I lowkey think every modern leftist discourse should consider and incorporate these facts front and center. We are materialists if anything and should face the facts; I believe there will be massive wake up calls in terms of the consequences in much of the world very soon - this is terrain ripe for change.

  • And if a massive climate disaster event occurs, do you think that’ll be enough to convince them

For a lot of people, I do. I think many people like this are ultimately buried in their cultural context, and never had an event breaking them out of that mould / making them question what are for them basic assumptions about reality.

I think the vast majority of people are good and would care; it takes constant reinforcement to make them accept (and for many, barely, despite the image they may project) their constant participation in an absurd, evil system and to make them actively link their self-worth to it.

Also, at the end of the day, there are more and more people barely surviving and there are less and less people like your brother as time goes on; eventually we reach a critical threshold. And at that threshold there are a lot more of the former than the latter willing to fight.
