  • I was just talking to my father last week about this exact thing. He built his house about 10 years ago and bought the land close to 30 years ago. He was a steel worker so not terrible pay but nothing amazing. That house today would be well over 1mil. No way he could have built it today. And we live pretty close to the middle of nowhere, Indiana. I pray I can buy my brother out one day, at this rate it’s the only chance I have of owning a nice house. Even with a STEM degree I’m looking at maybe 70k salary right now. Which I thought would be awesome when I started college but now that I graduated, I feel like anything under 6 figures will be hard to live a middle class life on. I guess I’m lucky I spent my 20s broke and homeless, I have learned to really stretch a dollar.

  • I live about 45min outside of a major city. I’m also looking for my first career type job. We do have a train that goes into the city which my mother has taken for many years. The only way I’d be ok commuting in would be if I can take the train or a bus. Thinking of spending an extra 10hrs+ driving each week sounds so terrible. That’s 25% more hours each week that I don’t get paid and instead have to pay money. The only other way would be a hybrid schedule with only 2 days commuting per week.

I actually get kind of excited to commute by train, I used to not have a car up in the twin cities and I read so much more having to take public transit. I would totally get a steam deck or ROG ally and finally get to play Hades and Hollow Knight.

There are downsides though. Like if you want to go by the store or a friend’s on the way home you probably can’t. Also if you just miss your train, you might be waiting a long while. Lastly our train here is fairly dangerous and the nearest stop is in one of the most dangerous cities in the US.

I wish biking was easier but where I live there is no way I could get into the city. Plus I used to bike to my first job, about 5 miles, and it sucks to get there and be sweaty. Guess with e bikes now that isn’t as big of a deal.

  • As many others have said already, I loved signal until they ended sms support. I’m not going to have two separate messaging apps. Especially when 90% of people I know won’t use signal and don’t care about encryption. I just use the Google messaging app, which in my opinion is way better than Samsung’s app. I enjoy rcs support and as I understand it, there is still e2e encryption.

That being said, if I’m doing anything illegal I’m going to force the people to use signal or something safer. As much as I love Google, I’m not going to trust them to keep me out of jail. Nudes would probably be the most sensitive thing I’d trust Google with.

Oh and I dont mind the Facebook messenger app if you use the secure mode. Hate Facebook though, just the messenger is ok.

  • Heck i couldn’t easily check if diablo 4 servers were wonky because I can’t check the blizzard Twitter. Obviously this is less important than an amber alert. As another reply said, I think police need a better way to disseminate emergency information and that is on them. However something like server status is a perfect use of Twitter that is now close enough to impossible to do. If public agencies are going to continue using Twitter for these purposes, then something needs to change. Personally I’d be ok with the government having a little more say in things if we are going to continue viewing Twitter as a public service.
