4·8 hours agoWhen a government owned and operated service becomes a privately owned and operated service they need to lose and renegotiate all the concessions and free stuff they get, before anyone can claim it’s a financial gain to the government.
Are there any success stories of a privatization of a government monopoly in the long term? One time cash injection to the government followed by decades of bailouts, failing infrastructure, and reduction of services.
Their interpretation of scripture is literally god’s word

Technology@programming.dev•VPN location claims don't match real traffic exitsEnglish
0·4 days agoPeople who trust these influencer-shilled vpn providers over their ISP are awfully brave or have terrible ISPs. I wonder how many people actually put together that they’re replacing one untrustworthy entity with an other untrustworthy entity.
But this makes a lot of sense. I saw a list of exit nodes recently and assumed they were doing some GeoIP fuckery instead of actual routing

131·7 days agoEducation makes a tremendous difference. Americans have mentally ill people probably at the same rate as EU, but also has ignorant people and that’s where the difference is made up. If you travel 3 hrs in USA, you’ll find the same culture. If you travel 3 hrs in Europe, you’ll be in a different culture altogether.

Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•It'd be nice if we could have some reasonable, efficient KeisEnglish
33·7 days agoI agree with the spirit of the post - the tanks Americans have been taught to adore are a bigger safety risk than a small car and I love my Smart. However, the Euro NCAP are performed at speeds not exceeding 60kph. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to require that in order to travel on roads with a 50kph speed limit, the vehicle will not crumple like a piece of tissue and kill the occupants. There is the separate quadricycle test which demonstrates the risks of these vehicles.
The Euro NCAP also have the valuable pedestrian safety tests and extrication ratings.

News@lemmy.world•Here's what Canadian provinces are doing with all the US liquor they pulled off shelvesEnglish
7·8 days agoLow ABV beverages like wine and beer don’t take age well. Some wines can age in the bottle, but most volume is not made with that in mind. Beer has a shorter shelf life than many people realize. Spirits don’t age (well) in the bottle either.

Well, in that case, autopilot isn’t safer than a human driver. It needs to be able to handle idiot drivers better than a human to be better than a human
Imagine how many accidents would be avoided if there were fewer cars with fewer drivers because instead of investing in robotaxis and more roads, money was invested into public transit.
