Entry point: Manjaro. Yes, many will tell it’s not super stable in the long run, but since you plan on jumping from one to the other, this doesn’t matter. What does matter is that it’s simple, fast, and gets you up to speed with latest Linux developments without any stress. It’s easy, it’s fun, and you can go anywhere from there

After some experience: OpenSUSE Tumbleweed. This thing is a tinkerer’s paradise. Solid foundation and the newest software, snapshots beautifully configured by default so you could unwind everything, and no unnecessary guardrails so you can do whatever you want. However, it expects the user to know at least a little of what they’re doing, so it’s not a novice choice.

  • Hey, welcome to Lemmy! Hope you like it here :)

As in everywhere on the Fediverse, there is no consistent etiquette for every place, as different people concentrate in different places. But overall, if you’re nice to others, they will be nice to you!

For the most part, Lemmy is politically left, LGBTQIA+ friendly, privacy-minded, welcomes copyleft and piracy, loves to get geeky. The most loud audiences are IT crowd and scientists, but people from all walks of life are present.

If you don’t fit into something, it’s alright - you cannot be globally banned by anyone but your instance admin, and even then you can move on to another instance. Downvotes also mean nothing and don’t downrank your posts and comments. There’s no karma system - technically, servers do record your up- and downvotes, but they don’t affect anything at all.

Still, be nice and you’ll be warmly welcomed by the community. Here, you have a real chance to become a legend!

  • I appreciate your desire for more nuance, and I support it throughout discussions.

But the case of Bill Gates is fairly clear-cut. His philanthropy efforts are covering for shitty business practices and tax evasion.

This is one of the reasons why people are concerned about billionaire philanthropy in the first place. It creates a good image of a savior, while serving to reduce taxes and cover for malicious investments. We would be much, much better off taking this in form of taxes and actually allocating it for good.
