CNN Portugal tonight was already distorting the current situation, claiming that Costa’s recent statements about Europeans not being subject to US interference were due to Trump saying that Europe would collapse civilizationally in 20 years because of its immigration policies, which is false or at least not the whole truth. Costa said what he said because the USA now considers the dismantling of the EU and support for Eurosceptic parties a priority in its defense strategy.

Europe, betrayed, is under attack.

I wouldn’t say that, I know very well how brutal they could be and were in Asia and South America, but it’s also true that they have proven to be reliable allies for Europe on several occasions. In my country, Portugal, we probably wouldn’t have had a democracy without their support. Not everyone in the various governments was good, of course; Kissinger, for example, wanted to invade the Azores, cut aid to Portuguese socialist (PS) and social democratic (PSD) parties and leave behind a failed communist dictatorship in Portugal as an example to discourage the Western European left. But overall, I would say that, for a relatively long period, American influence and partnership were positive in Europe.

The problem is that we also have many of these assholes in each of our countries, with the same opinions as Musk (but perhaps a little quieter about it) and with enough resources to also buy politicians and cause damage. It is the citizen’s duty to be vigilant. It should be the journalists’ duty to expose them, but investigative journalism has been dying, giving way almost exclusively to opinion-shaping commentators.
