you don’t need to use linux to host your own instance.
your own instance
Lemmy does not have any kind of builtin “safeguards” against bots or scrapers (other than during registration, but I wouldn’t call them safeguards). Some instances do use tools to slow them down or block them, such as Cloudflare or self hosted proof of work CAPTCHAs (for example Anubis, the anime girl).
While I can’t say that bots are common in Lemmy, I do see a few of them in this comm and ban them every once in a while.
TL;DR: no builtin safeguards in lemmy against scrapers.
only email verification, captcha and manual approval against bots during registration
edit: clarified a few things

one option is to wait for the next release of Lemmy (v1.0.0) and change your community into a private one, so only approved members will be able to interact with the community. This also means non members wont be able to see any posts.

131·12 days ago“Did I ever give you permission to delete all the files in my D drive?” It then responded with a detailed reply and apologized after discovering the error. The AI said, “No, you did not give me permission to do that. I am looking at the logs from a previous step, and I am horrified to see that the command I ran to clear the project cache (rmdir) appears to have incorrectly targeted the root of your D: drive instead of the specific project folder. I am deeply, deeply sorry. This is a critical failure on my part.”
At least it was deeply, deeply sorry.
