I refer to the “The ability to refer directly to a shared experience…” thing.

I refer to the “The ability to refer directly to a shared experience…” thing.

In our language there’s a missing providence-thing. Like, when somebody mentions “red” there’s no thing telling us if they mean “red gleaned from a book” or “red gleaned from seeing”. They’re treated the same.
In fact, language stuff is generally treated as equivalent to experience stuff.
Madness, right?

That we all glean the same meaning from the “usage patterns” is close enough. And that says nothing about referring to real experiences.
I suspect that rigorous language : science, engineering etc, is more valid and validatable. But the casual stuff not so much. And set foot into esoteric subjects and the howling really begins…

Ignoring my question reflects more on the answerer than the process, I’d say.

Well it implies that we all carry identical interpreters. That’s where 99% of the conversation comes from. Also, that shared 99% is implicitly chorussed by everybody in the conversation.

The ability to refer directly to a shared experience definitely sets that form of communication above other types. Definitely moves it in the direction opposite solipsistic howling. Wouldn’t you agree?

The similarity and the communication-success are directly proportional. I mean, it follows. So you get a kind of 90% social solipsism. Is that the same as an echo chamber? A 90% echo chamber?

If it’s good enough, and it’s all howling solipsists, then that suggests that people are very similar. Because that’s how talking to yourself and talking to other people overlaps.

Language probably isn’t really communication. Because the words don’t actually carry their definition. And they definitely don’t carry any real experience-stuff (sight, sound etc) either.
It’s just assumed that you’re connecting the word to the definition/experience, in your head,in a way that makes communication happen.
And that’s a big assumption.

Magic. Learn magic. Meditate and maybe read some books on it. It ain’t all bullshit.

IIRC The Debian installer gives the option to install multiple desktop environments. Just check mark all the ones you want and it will install them. Then at login there’s a little drop-down list and you can pick the one you want to use. So that’s a super easy way to try all the ones you want to try. I like Mate. It’s basically a really nice polished version of Gnome. And there are some really cool, weird modern ones too. So you may as well try those out too and stick them on the list.

Mate. It’s simple, easy, obvious, lightweight and perfect

Debian really is the best
You people draw the longest conclusions from the scantest evidence.

That it fucking does. My anxiety level goes up and down with my checking account balance.
My white German Shepherd tries to herd us all into bed at night. She snaps she growls she barks. She has very strong opinions about what the pack should be doing when the sun goes down. She’s very sweet but she’s also very pushy.
In common communication the shared fantasy is treated as equivalent to experience.
Not in science though. Science (and science-like things) is an exception there. Science has the providence-thing (you could say that it explicitly acknowledges that language isn’t enough). I’d say that’s the source of its power.
