5·2 days agoIf Canada’s PM can see this, then why can’t Australia’s? Albo, are you really going to wait and hope not to be noticed while our ally turns into the Fourth Reich, doing nothing to separate ourselves before it’s too late?

Off My Chest@lemmy.world•The cynicism behind faulting americans who didn't even vote for Trump is concerningEnglish
252·3 days agoIf you think voting will beat these fascists, you need to think harder about how you got here. You do not have an effective opposition, the Democrats are bought and paid for by corporations.
The midterm vote will not be free and fair. And if you wait until that is clear before fighting back, it will be much harder to do so.
I know you can’t do much against the power of the state alone. But you have to resist, or flee. Fleeing is fine, btw, there’s going to be a lot of refugees.

Star Trek @lemmy.world•He just sits his ass down on all those buttons- he may or may not be firing lasers out into space
4·3 days agoWhy do they need any crew member? Just send the ship off by itself!
Except that the entire point is for the crew to go out and look around themselves. They’re not just serving a function, they’re explorers. And so is Data.

World News@lemmy.world•‘Climate change is here’: Experts warn environmental crisis is decades ahead of forecastsEnglish
5·3 days agoMostly correct. One note: the experts have been saying it’s worse than the IPCC (or any government) says it is since the 90s. The experts, in universities and legit research institutions all around the world, have long known this is going to be a shit show, and they have already accepted that we did not do what was needed to avoid impacts on the world that have a good chance to end human civilisation and kill billions of people. It’s not a slam dunk, btw, there are still ways to get away with, say, only hundreds of millions dead from starvation, war, disease, heatstroke, etc.
But no expert who has been paying attention thinks we’re getting out of this without at least that. I know a few of them, they’ve actually done their grieving already because they know we didn’t stop it when we could, and they know what’s coming.
It seems like a way to help old fucks like me - who have never used anything but Windows and hate anything new and still bitch about the windows key - learn how to use Linux without throwing up our hands and going back to Windows 11. I am planning to use Mint, and Cinnamon, when I nuke my desktop’s Windows installation, because I’m just too goddamn tired to learn too many new things at a time and I liked Windows 98.
Is Cinnamon still a good idea for me, even though it does not sound like a good idea for people still able to form new neuronal connections?

3·6 days agoWhat is adding doom and gloom? That’s the metric that really matters here. According to the sub, anyway. I do enjoy a technical definition conversation, and with the majority thing you’ve probably hit on a workable metric for a sub more interested in bridging a divide.
However, this sub seems to be more about “Hey, we just don’t wanna feel bad about current events while reading these, okay?” It seems that a mere reference to a trans person does not make most people feel bad. And that actually correlates with polls of the general population.
