I’ve only used KDE until recently because it’s pretty familiar feeling after coming from windows, but my wife recently put gnome on her laptop and she loves it. I’ve used it a bit, and besides just being unfamiliar I do actually like it.

4·2 months agoNetflix and Spotify almost ended Piracy by making it easy to access whatever you wanted for a reasonable fee. Then they got greedy and everyone else wanted a piece of the pie and now we are in a worse position than package bundle Cable TV.

Technology@lemmy.world•More Than Half of Gen Z Users Cancel and Renew Streaming Services for a Single Title, Won’t Purchase Full-Price Video Games, New Study FindsEnglish
7·2 months agoI’m in my late 30’s and went back to the high seas. I used to sail the seas in my early 20’s when i was broke AF and didn’t have cable TV. When Netflix came around it sudden became easier and more convenient to just pay $6.99/ month to watch whatever I wanted. For years I got by with Spotify and Netflix and I didn’t even look back. Then, all of a sudden there were more streaming services than i knew what to do with and every few months they would all raise their price and reduce their libraries. Then they started putting ads in. Now I’m self hosting all of my media and using Stremio/Torentio for my one off TV shows and movies. I directly support creators wherever I can as well, whether it’s Patreon or Kofi or just buying their Merch.

Quark's@startrek.website•RIP social media. What comes next is messy.English
5·2 months agoThere are absolutely echo chambers and polarization on Lemmy. It’s definitely less noticeable than Reddit or Facebook, but its still there. They can definitely be good things too, but when the conversation is driven by one or a few people and everyone else constantly agrees or goes along with the status quo it becomes a problem.
For profit models seem to prioritize engagement over moderation, as long as people are commenting and driving engagement, even if it’s largely negative, toxic, or even completely false, it’s okay.
On Lemmy, at least for the most part, Toxic behaviour isn’t tolerated and most communities are pretty good at discouraging false narratives. I don’t think I’ve ever felt attacked here, or really elsewhere on Lemmy, for providing my views in a comment section like I did on Reddit, even if they were contrary to the prevailing opinions. When attacks and negativity are not tolerated actual discussion is much easier.

PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•Xbox Mode Arrives on Windows 11 PCs for Console-Style GamingEnglish
81·2 months agoI mean, its probably a good thing for those that still use microslop, but for those of us who have left for the freedom of Linux it’s too little too late. I’m glad that it’s working out for you though.
There aren’t that many “limitations” for gaming on Linux these days. If you’re into older PC games Linux works much better than windows. Most new games work as good or better too. I wholeheartedly recommend that you give it a try, especially since you seem to know what you are doing PC wise. I went from being constantly frustrated with my system (especially with broken updates) to actually feeling like I was in control of it.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Those in countries with universal healthcare, what's it like?
4·2 months agoCanadian here. I broke my leg in January. The only thing I ended up paying for was $25 for a pair of crutches. I did have to wait a significant amount of time to get seen, but its a small hospital and someone walked in with a stab wound right after me, so I was okay with it.
We do currently have a doctor shortage in my province and I myself do not have a family doctor, which does complicate things, but there are clinics around that I can still go to that are just less personal than a family physician.
We do have to pay out of pocket for prescriptions, but generally speaking the cost for most things are pretty low. There’s also a whole bunch of basic I also have 80% drug coverage through my employer, which is pretty common as well. In addition in my province a lot of diabetes medication is provided free of charge.

Games@lemmy.world•"Game preservation only works if people care" As GOG doubles down on its commitment to saving old games, it's asking players "who give a s**t" to support its crusadeEnglish
3·4 months agoI assumed it was a Patreon because of the name, but its still a for profit company asking their customers for donations in the form of a monthly subscription so they can sell you more games. You don’t get anything tangible out of it, just a private Discord and a badge on your name.
Its skeezy no matter how you spin it.

Games@lemmy.world•"Game preservation only works if people care" As GOG doubles down on its commitment to saving old games, it's asking players "who give a s**t" to support its crusadeEnglish
7·4 months agoGog has been my preference for a few years now, but there’s no way I’m subscribing to a patreon that gets me literally nothing. I honestly assumed at first you’d get something out of it at first, like a free game from the preservation program every month or something similar to Amazon Prime’s giveaways. Its honestly cause me to start to re evaluate how much I purchase from them. Its kinda skeezy.
Its not Foss, but gog.com is based in Europe. It offers DRM free games. Lots of old games, but also tons of new games as well.

Star Trek Social Club@startrek.website•Episode Discussion | Star Trek: Starfleet Academy | 1x07 “Ko’Zeine”English
12·4 months agoThis was most definitely my least favourite. Why show what Kionians look like in episode 1 when you’re just going to make them all look human in episode 7. Just seems lazy to me.
Genesis and Caleb’s story was better, but seemed out of character for Genesis. I also disliked the suggestion that men & women can’t be friends without falling in love with each other.

13·5 months agoI’m starting to like the Venari Ral quite a bit actually. They seem to be more like actual mustache twirling pirates rather than a tyranical government masquerading as pirates like the chain was. I’m waiting for Calebs mom to be re-introduced as his right hand in the finale.

Star Trek Social Club@startrek.website•Trill Symbiont LifespansEnglish
15·5 months agoI really like this take. I did get the impression that Dax is also kinda the wild child of the symbiotes too, for many of the reasons you listed. They are also very passionate about their friends. They chose to uphold a blood oath that even the Klingons didn’t consider binding, they stood by Sisko for 3 lifetimes, they refused to break the confidence of one of Curzon’s married lovers, at the risk of their life, and they protected Jake’s book, for many centuries. They hold onto these generational bonds, even though its taboo for the Trill.

Games@lemmy.world•Obsidian's The Outer Worlds 2 Underperformed, and There Won't Be a Third - IGNEnglish
14·5 months agoAAA games are just too expensive and many are just not finished at release now. I’m not forking out top dollar for a half finished game. Outer Worlds 2 is still $89.99 CAD. That is absolutely insane in my opinion. I enjoyed the first one, but I also bought it on sale. Indy games nowadays are generally a better bang for your buck anyways and theyre only $30-40 regular price and they are also generally at a finished state or at the very least very honest about the state they are in.
I’ll probably pick the game up in 2 years when its $20 on Steam or something.

Yeah, but if they started right now I bet they could pump out some new adults inside of 20 years.
