Stopped using Reddit when the API disaster happened. Switched to Lemmy and stayed there for about 2 years. Now, I’m experimenting with Piefed.

Apparently you saw that 400 battery video too.
Makes me wonder how these mice reach for the pitchers, bowls, cups, and anything above. So much of the kitchen is unavailable to them unless they have a ladder somewhere.
Regardless, a lovely picture. Love the art style.

1·3 days ago😄 Such a familiar feeling, especially when it comes to software. You go to the official site and read until you fall asleep. Usually, I’ll just skip that and go straight to the relevant Wikipedia site, read the first three lines, and get the general idea of what that thing is all about. Works well with established technologies I haven’t heard of before. Doesn’t work with things that were invented two months ago.

10·3 days agoSo in his view, the fair comparison is, “If you ask ChatGPT a question, how much energy does it take once its model is trained to answer that question versus a human? And probably, AI has already caught up on an energy efficiency basis, measured that way.”
How about we do a life-cycle assessment instead.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why is traveling such a big deal for people?English
2·4 days agoTravel has many facets, and growing, learning, and broadening your horizons are certainly part of it. Those reasons aren’t fake, but I’d argue none of them are the core reason why people think so highly of travel. Naturally, travel often involves conspicuous consumption, spending lots of money, polluting the environment, and general decadence. That’s why people feel the need to justify it—that’s why you hear so much about the secondary reasons.

2·4 days agoThe advertisement-based business model has turned out to be highly successful, just like the newspapers have proven. However, magazines were a hybrid solution. You would pay for the magazine, but there would still be a few ads. Reminds me of modern Netflix actually.

Additional info on lockdown mode
Lockdown Mode is an optional, extreme protection that’s designed for the very few individuals who, because of who they are or what they do, might be personally targeted by some of the most sophisticated digital threats. Most people are never targeted by attacks of this nature.
If you’ve identified in your threat model that your phone could fall into the wrong hands, and someone might try to hack into it, using lockdown could save the day. Very least, the hackers are not going to have an easy day.

This was supposed to be an absurd joke, but apparently reality is just even more messed up. Comedians can’t even compete with this stuff.

A still from that video really looks like something from a space telescope. Small glowing dots and a gas cloud in the background.
