I don’t think it is personally but I think that depends on your thoughts about its character. To use an analogy, if you think of metal bands where swapping out members is quite common, I’d argue that the changes are much more noticeable than on something like a PC. The vocal or lyrical style changes, or the guitar solos, while still good lose something in their character.

Thinking of my own computers going from when I was 17 to the one I have now at 37, the technology is so vastly improved that the character would’ve been lost with most upgrades.

I think unless it’s a purely cosmetic change or maybe a storage upgrade, i.e. an improvement to existing components, it just isn’t the same.

I dunno what it was about reddit. I’ve always hated the level of discourse there. The stupid novelty accounts and the same regurgitated joke replies on every. single. thread. and yet I would still sift through the trash to find the good stuff. Now there’s just no good stuff.

The new thing is where they make it look like a user has commented about the new baconator or having better sex or whatever garbage. It’s enshittification all the way down.

I know posting this on Lemmy is SO BRAVE, but I’m not sure if the low quality of reddit is a result of popularity or something else. I think there is probably a tipping point where the level of discussion reaches the lowest common denominator due to the chasing of upvotes and trying to cater to popular opinion.

I game on both the deck and a desktop with pop!_os. I can say gaming on my desktop is just as good if not better than the deck for because it can leverage my desktop hardware and it’s way easier to go under the hood with proper peripherals. Linux has come a long way with gaming. Most of the shit that doesn’t run on linux are games that cost too much for too little content or they’re just gonna be battle pass/cosmetic farms that cater to whales and aren’t actually fun in any sense of the word.

If you’re gonna be a top 0.0001% competitive gamer, you’ll probably wanna stick to windows. If you don’t play FPSes competively, a linux based gaming PC is probably fine. Me? I’m a middle aged dude with kids who racks up about 20 hours a week somehow, and linux more than suits my needs.

I’ve had more success with Lutris and Wine in getting certain abandonware games (Black and White for example) to run than I ever did on Windows.

I switched to PopOS from Windows 11 in three hours. I had been backing everything up for weeks though. Generally everything I did on Windows works out of the box on PopOS.

Aside from my bluetooth speaker not connecting automatically and needing to run a Windows VM for Corsair peripheral LEDs, I’ve not had to do a ton of customization.

It’s been well worth it. Really enjoying it so far and highly recommend.

archive.is or archive.ph is what I use for getting past paywalls. If it’s a hard membership paywall there won’t be much you can do about it. If it’s just a splash screen, they work by removing the annoying stuff that prevents you from going further since they have to package the content for SEO. The archive sites basically grab that content as if they were going to index it for a search engine, but then they present it in human readable format instead.

I get around this by not using dogshit platforms.

I think your characterization is probably somewhat incorrect. I care, and I have seen other parents care. Maybe single childless people don’t care, but this is not always the case.

I care about other people’s kids. I want them housed, fed, clothed, etc.

I want my tax dollars to improve other’s lives so they have what they need to be self-actualized human beings.

I won’t let them get hurt at the playground if I can help it.

I watch them when they cross the street to make sure they do it safely.

I have little ones myself and I believe it takes a village. I’m also 37 and a German/US dual national. I was raised to care, and the societal standards for the US are not a one size fits all definition globally. My wife is Latina and her family is friendly to all children and show lots of care. Germans watch out for others’ kids as they walk to school or play on the playground. It’s disappointing to hear that the fake niceness of the US really is fake here but not very surprising. You truly can’t relate to each other. I am glad I’m moving out next year.

Yes yes. I know this is the internet and kids bad, but I do enjoy when a child smiles or has a small victory. And I enjoy seeing my friend’s children be friends with mine and grow up together.

TLDR some of us care and love to see pictures and hear about your kids.

I bought a 2080ti for $1200 right before covid and everyone gave me shit about how I was wasting my money because the 3000 series had a lower MSRP which then ballooned to $2000+.

So while everyone else was struggling to get a graphics card due to supply chain issues and prohibitive costs, I was gaming in 4k resolution throughout the pandemic. To say that this was clutch during a time I couldn’t really do much outside of the house with other people would be a massive understatement.

I usually would not have spent that much on a card, but I won a hackathon cash prize right before so had some money burning a hole in my pocket. The card is still going strong and is still my daily driver, so I can’t say it’s been a bad purchase at all.

Here’s my morning routine:

1. Wake up at 8 (assuming a crying baby doesn’t wake me up sooner)

2. Change diapers

3. Spend time with my wife and sons

4. Walk to the grocery store with my toddler (3500 steps round trip or so)

5. Drink a kombucha on the way home (coffee raises my cholesterol and gives me awful anxiety symptoms)

6. Change diapers

7. Take my toddler to the playground, weather permitting

8. Have lunch with my wife and sons

9. Read books to my toddler, change his diaper, and put him down for a nap

10. Think about how I’m leaving the USA next year partially because American work culture is absolute trash

I’m on paternity leave and it’s been the best part of my career. As in not working at all is the best part of my career. How fucked is that?

I would gladly change diapers and hang out with screaming kids all day instead of dealing with my dumb ass coworkers and people who can’t honor a meeting invite planned weeks out but then expect me to “hop on a quick call” which then achieves nothing. Between the constant threat of layoffs and losing my livelihood and the political backdrop of having my family deported because they’re too dark a shade of brown and speak Spanish sometimes?

Not a biologist, but it actually is better on paper. They can still pierce other animals. Just not humans. They stay part of the food chain for amphibians and birds or what not, we don’t get malaria. Seems like a win-win.

My theory as someone from Appalachia is that she’s a left leaning centrist trying to bring class consciousness back to the coal mining areas (y’know, where they shot their bosses in literal battles to establish worker unions previously), but she also depends on those local economies to get resources to do this and has to play both sides.

She’s made it her life’s mission to improve the education and literacy rate of the region and has to appear homey and down to earth to the folks living in the south as she doesn’t want to compromise her image. She says things in a vague enough way to not be accused of being a dirty lefty commie (their words, not mine).

I don’t think you deserve pushback, just offering an alternative explanation.
