So today I finally got to see myself as #QuanChi in the new #mortalkombat MK1. And of course it’s cool, people are very happy for me. This is all a given.

About 1.5 years ago, when I was first offered this “video game face scanning gig” (no other details) and once I signed several NDAs and was actually told that it was for Mortal Kombat, of course I said yes. That was the before times.

I can’t help but look at it in the context of the current discussions about AI, the strikes in Hollywood, and the future of me and my peers as an actor, model, VO artist, and how we all would like to continue to be able to this sort of work and make a living doing it.

I signed this contract a couple years ago now, and they own me and my likeness forever. They paid me once, never have to again, never even have to give me credit anywhere and there’s nothing I can do about it.

    It’s fucked up, but we’ve all had that conversation on Hexbear before. Instead I’m gonna just ramble about the new Mortal Kombat.

    I want to get excited. I really do. The roster looks great. I’m so happy that Havik is back, even if the writers really need to learn what the word ‘anarchy’ means. I heard the gameplay is a huge step up from 11, which just felt sluggish and clunky to me so I refunded it after 30 minutes. But HOLY SHIT, the sheer amount of guest characters, the microtransactions, the seasonal bullshit. Fuck, what even is this? It should have been an indicator back on the PS2 when they had like 9 types of different coins to unlock stuff with, but who could have known back then? And at least you could get those very easily during casual gameplay. Now there’s premium currency, timed shit, if you name a scummy business practice then chances are this new MK fuckin has it.

    Goddamn you Warner Brothers. I grew up on MK, and you just took a fat shit all over it in the name of profit. But, shame on me here - what else is to be expected?
