pizza? flowers? a card?
Also, what’s the phrase in english for support and encouragement to keep going when someone is going through a difficult time? In chinese say “加油” (literally: add oil ie. add fuel to keep going) or in french we say “courage”, don’t know what the phrase is in english.
I would appreciate it if a friend spent time with me or took me out for food and drinks. You could also get their favorite snack or a gift card to their favorite coffee shop or store.

I was thinking of this but we unfortunately live quite far apart. I hate to say this but I don’t know their favourite snack or store. They’re a friend from college so I know their go to places to eat but it’s mostly student type food (all you can eat sushi, burritos, etc)
Gotcha, maybe you can find a sushi or burrito place near their house. I am always ready for sushi or a burrito! Or find somewhere they posted about on social media (if they use it). Other ideas are meat snacks (jerky, biltong, summer sausage), spicy nuts, caramel and cheese popcorn, hot sauce, whiskey, cookies, xbox or PS gift card.
Just to spend time with me and listen to me. That’s all. Trust me I’ve been in that situation and pretty alone
I don’t know if we have a single word for that in English, I might say “keep your chin up” but that often comes across as demeaning. Maybe “you’ve got this,” “you’ll get through this” or “God doesn’t put more on you than you can handle” if they’re religious.
As far as what I want, probably someone to plot with me on how to egg the car of that bastard that fired me. Barring that, pizza/wings/general hang out.
There is a quote from Winston Churchill that says “if you are going through hell, keep going.” as in, the only way out of a bad situation is to move forward.
My grandpa always used to say that “you can’t jump in puddles unless it’s a rainy day” as a way to say a bad situation comes with its own opportunities or upsides (as in bad weather sucks but at least you can have fun jumping in the puddles).
Hope everything works out for you all. I always appreciate a card from someone no matter the situation.
Offer to have a gaming session if that is something you both do. It’s low commitment (they can bail at any time easily), shows you care, and helps take their mind off it while having fun
Best thing is if we could go grab lunch or a pie together, honestly. Time is the best thing you can give.
What’s their financial situation? Were they living paycheck to paycheck, or can they afford to be unemployed for a little while? Did this have a major impact on their career, or was it just an unimportant, easily replaceable job?
Just leave them completely alone. Give them time to bury the feelings deep, deep down where they can never come back out.
The key to this is that if they ask for help, you tell them to be a man, suck it up and get back to work.
^^this ^^is ^^sarcasm, ^^obviously.
Normalcy. Not to pretend that nothing is happened but to hang out like you would anyway. Whether that is to play a game or watch a movie something distracting that isn’t out of the ordinary.
I think the issue is that losing a job has a different urgency then others. If I immediately lost my job most of my discomfort would be in what I’m going to do in terms of rent and further living. So maybe the first thing I’d want is to hear that I have some support or safety, like a place to crash if I couldn’t pay rent.
Company
personally alls im going to care about in that situation is applying for unemployment and getting my resume out till I get a new job and tightening my belt as much as I can manage.
Weed edibles and a hug
Probably a machine gun or some frozen meals
