Cinema owners oppose a megadeal that would see one of the last Hollywood legacy studios snapped up only five years after the demise of 20th Century Fox: "We have fixed costs."
In 2000 the outing you described would be a little over $60 in New York (only source I can find quickly; assumptions: 2 adults, 2 kids, 2 large popcorns, 4 candies, 4 sodas). About $32 for tickets, $10 for popcorn, $12 for candy, $10-12 for sodas. [1]
Assuming my assumptions are roughly correct, that’s still about $115-120 with inflation. However that means prices have increased 25-30%. The adult ticket price for Zootopia 2 for my area is $24 for an evening showing, which is about 30% over inflation. I expect the same general trend for concessions as well. Mostly this is to pay a bigger and bigger cut to studios.
Edit: And instantly down voted for trying to add to the conversation. Maybe I just need to stop posting on Lemmy completely. This place has gotten a lot less friendly since I first joined (not my first handle).
Holy shit, where?? The Jack Loeks sold tickets in 2000 for five bucks. You only needed one bucket of popcorn because it was bottomless. I never bought candy but I assume for whatever reason your region inflated those prices too.
This was New York, but I worked at a movie theater in the Midwest a couple years prior to that and it wasn’t that far off. As I recall our matinees were $4.50 and our evening shows were like $7.50 or something (adult tickets). So that’s around $25 for a family of four. People would buy multiple large popcorns even though they were refillable just so they didn’t have to leave the theater. Back then nearly everyone stopped by the concessions stand on the way in.
Regardless of a $1-2 difference in ticket prices, the concessions prices are pretty accurate from my experience.

There we go.
