After WWII ended, the Allies implemented a program of denazification of Germany. Now, people have argued that this was poorly done, and they may have some good points, but at least an effort was made. Hell, we allowed the Southern states to put up monuments to the Confederacy, and those didn’t get taken down until very recently.
Most of those monuments were erected a century later, to assert dominance during the Civil Rights era.

Andrew Fucking Johnson. The president that drove reconstruction in a Confederate apologist manner. Had more of his desires been signed into law, the country probably would have had a follow up hot civil war a lot sooner.
I’ve always thought Buchanan and Johnson were probably tied for the worst president US history. Well I used to.
Personally, I think even waiting til reconstruction was a mistake.
I get not wanting to accept any validity to the confederate state’s secession, and therefore have them maintain statehood after the war as opposed to becoming US owned territories.
But, imo, the moment the war started, congress should have been convened, and the constitution amended to dissolve the senate, which was only created to give power to the southern states, giving ‘land a vote’. Likewise, it should have been amended to force all state governments to do the same, by mandating all state legislative bodies be unicameral, and comprised solely of representatives representing an equal number of citizens.
In doing so, after the war, the freed slaves would have constituted a strong majority over the remaining white men, and the union states a strong and enduring majority in the US congress.
Sherman needed to make a sweeping left hand turn when he reached Savannah and give it a second pass.

White backlash is not something that white people believe exists. And when pressed about white backlash being a reality white people will say that white people deserve to do it.
Until we can convince people identifying as “white” is as trashy as smoking cigarettes we are fucked.

To add a bit of color. One of the primary reasons the North made slavery illegal was because they didn’t want African American people moving north. Racism vs racism and racism won.
