Perhaps he’s forgotten that free speech means you’re free to say whatever you want, but you’re not free from the repercussions. Especially in all the “at will” employee states.

    This is so stupid.

“At will” is pure conservative bullshit, right down to the name being a lie that makes “fired for illegal reasons but wink wink doesn’t count” harmful to even discuss.

No relation to Musk’s stupidity. Just picking a nit.

That’s exactly what I mean. Employees in At Will states can legally be fired for anything short of violations of protected classes, so I’m not sure how he’s expecting to win here.

No, they can be fired for those reasons, it’s on the fired employee to prove it was because of those protected reasons and be able to fight it after the fact in court.

When an employer can choose to go into as little detail as “you’re fired because I said so” it takes a very stupid employer to lose that fight.

It helps if you still have friends that work at the company, that can kind of spy for you too.

An older woman was fired from the company I worked at in the early 2000s, and she was friends with a few people that still worked at the company. Found out she was replaced with a younger less qualified guy, and her friends were able to corroborate a lot of the ageism/sexism stuff, and she won the suit. Think she ended up being awarded something like whatever her salary was until the age of retirement, and ended up with close to a million dollar settlement.

Musk’s philosophy is apparently: if it’s not okay to fire someone for being trans, a woman or for their race, why is it okay to fire someone for being anti-trans, misogynistic or racist?

Stupid? Definitely. A play out of Trump’s playbook? Kinda. Normally Trump is the one that gets sued.

They will probably look to get small to mid size employers to settle in order to avoid a costly legal battles. Although I wouldn’t be surprised if this is all just a ploy to keep his fanboys in line.

He’ll never actually do it. He simply wants to encourage more people to say outrageous things so engagement levels increase as everyone does dumb shit.

Good luck to anyone who falls for this.

When I look at the current state of the internet, I pine for the simpler days of the nineties when a/s/l and stormfront.org look downright warm and fuzzy in comparison. That was just weird individuals being weird. Now it’s institutionalized across the entire Internet.

He’s eating his children! I knew this day would come I just didn’t expect it to be so obvious! He needs engagement so he is going to incite people to say crazy things and then they are going to get in trouble and never be able to get a hold of him. He’s just literally fucking with the US government right now. I don’t know why but I think Musk is flexing his political strength in a way that he doesn’t realize will destroy him.

Aid spokesman engaged hyperbole drive and tweeted “if a billionaire like @musk gave us $40bn we could solve world hunger”

Musk replied “ok i’m listening, show me how you can solve it, if it sounds real I’ll write the cheque”

Aid spokesman (back pedalling) “well not solve as such, but definitely make better”

        Musk “whatevs then”

I mean he does say so much actual stupid shit, why do you guys keep making shit up ?

It’s possible. He literally burnt an extra 150 million dollars by bumping his offer for twitter to 54.20 just to make it a stupid 420 meme. It’s not like he doesn’t have the money to pay those bills.

He’s not offering it to former employees, but they should absolutely go for it very very publicly. Musk is fishing for money from Trump and Kanye, it’s probably some kind of laundering scheme.

Musk is fishing for money from Trump

Trump is very obviously not coming back to Twitter, doesn’t have an employer, and he’s offering to pay for the service, not charge for it, so I’m not sure how that theory pans out.

They are actually responsible for paying arbitration for all the ex-employees suing the company after Twitter argued in court that they must go through arbitration. Last I heard was that they were having trouble paying these legal costs as well.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Elon Musk has said his X social media platform will pay the legal bills and sue on the behalf of people who have been treated “unfairly” by employers because of posting or liking something on the site formerly known as Twitter.

“If you were unfairly treated by your employer due to posting or liking something on this platform, we will fund your legal bill,” Musk said in a post on X late on Saturday, adding that there will be no limits to funding the bills.

“And we won’t just sue, it will be extremely loud and we will go after the boards of directors of the companies too,” Musk said later in response to a post about nothing changing behavior in the US faster than a threat of legal action.

The figures came as the company is going through organizational changes and is looking to boost falling advertising revenue.

After 17 years with an iconic blue bird logo that came to symbolize the broadcasting of ideas to the world, Musk renamed Twitter as X and unveiled a new logo in July, marking a focus on building an “everything app”.

Earlier in July, the billionaire whose other companies include SpaceX and Tesla had said that the social media platform’s cashflow remains negative because of a nearly 50% drop in advertising revenue and a heavy debt load.

I find it fascinating to watch overall, but yeah how billionaires decide to administer their website isn’t really technology. Categorizing it as such feels like a consequence of a decision some boomer made back in the 90s to administer their newspaper that got adopted by default as the method websites are administered (which still isn’t technology).

Two fantasies - one, that anybody’s been persecuted for posting on what was the most popular communication tool in the world, and two, that a narcissist ignoring his own bills will ever cover yours.

People don’t get fired for where they post.

People get fired for what they post.

Twitter is still underwater from losing half their advertiser revenue plus the billions in debt they still owe. He’s not going to pay out unless he can find one particular case that will bring lots of attention. Elmo is an attention whore that everyone needs to ignore.
