I can’t believe there are real people out there that believe Hexbear of all things has done measurable damage to the Democrats. The sidebar says we’re at 724 users/day, there’s no way a niche shitposting community on a reddit clone swayed opinions on the Harris campaign even a single point. These people have completely bought into the helpless act the Dems put on and it’s sad.

Liberals truly believe politics is like Goku charging the spirit bomb. If you don’t offer enough intangible support like raw belief, you end up destroying everything. They think there’s a god of liberalism that we’re harming while we’re simultaneously giving spiritual energy to the demonic God of Russia.

Liberals believe in this because they’re so detached from political input they’ve decided politics must necessarily operate through spectacle and reaction. If you react incorrectly, it changes the nature of the spectacle, is how they see it.

Every leftist, when asked if/why we support China or any AES state, should simply say “I don’t support them, I like them. Unless the power of my opinion is some kind of real prayer, it makes exactly 0 difference”

Look, I was trying to be playful in my first response but I’m watching this get up votes so I’m just gonna be blunt. If you feel the need to say this, perhaps you’re better off just not calling yourself a leftist? Solidarity is a core concept of being leftist and if even the aesthetics of supporting AES states to a fucking LIB is that much of a burden, maybe being “leftist” isn’t for you?

Just hold the line, hexbear. It’s not rocket science.

You’re right, to the extent that one can exercise solidarity and be materially useful to the interests of the working classes of the entire world, one should do so. And there are real material links between helping organize and advance the positions of workers in, say, Guatemala, and the project of Chinese socialism. We shouldn’t shy away from saying as such, so yes, my previous message is not universally correct. It is correct in the context of raising money for Palestinians and someone interjecting with “you guys support Chinese authoritarianism though” because in that context, it really is salient and relevant to say that nothing Hexbear has done as a community materially[1] impacts China.

            1. By “materially,” in the loose way I’m using it in this sentence, I roughly mean to that extent and in the same order of significance of the previously stated fundraising drive ↩︎

I appreciate your acknowledgement, but hard disagree at this. Because at that point you’ve now engaged in their propagation of harmful stereotypes and have ceded the point to them. “Oh, you say so and so beats his wife? Well I don’t support him, but I still like him.” Fine you’re not contributing to impacting them materially, but you are now contributing to harming them. Debatable whether we need to be directly engaging with these assholes at all, but if you are it sure as hell shouldn’t be to appease them. Our job as leftist is to set an example and build the future. Not getting all wishy washy so the libs like us.

And if you’re only taking voting into account and doing a very rough “how many people are dying in Gaza” as the metric, as bad as Trump has been the sound position would be that voting for Trump was harm reduction (edited to avoid implying people here voted for Trump, which I doubt literally anyone did).

Israel has, on average, killed less people in Gaza per day under Trump than they did under Biden. That remains true. This basically says nothing about Trump it’s just to point out that Joe Biden was a genocidal maniac who loved killing Palestinians more than anything in this world including his own party’s ability to win elections.

Unfortunately that’s probably due to the fact that there have been less people to kill rather than any policy difference.

Also you should probably rephrase your first paragraph. They’d probably latch onto it and think “see they voted for trump” even though you’re probably just using their definition of voting for trump, which is anyone besides Kamala.

It’s a signal that you’re willing to give up your principles in exchange for what the candidate supports. So by voting for Kamala “most lethal military in the world” “the difference between me and Joe Biden is that I’m not Joe Biden” Harris, one helps Palestinians in the sense of giving them the security in knowledge that 100% of viable political parties and their supporters are A-OK with their slaughter. This is a buff.

First of all, in most democratic systems, funding is often decided by reaching a certain vote count. Second, in most functioning democracies, votes on stuff is not actually neatly split amongst party lines, so a different distribution of seats might change certain results on certain votes. Thirdly, often there’s another vote threshold than 50%, in most democracies there’s stuff like “you need 2/3 of the votes to change the constitution” or similar, at which point “how much you lose by” also matters.

And the most important of all is the categorical imperative/universalization. “What if everyone acted like you did?”

If everyone didn’t vote because “it doesn’t accomplish anything” then the result is that it doesn’t accomplish anything, you will definitely lose. But if everyone did vote even if it “doesn’t accomplish anything”, then suddenly you might win the vote because everyone voted.

If anyone from greater Lemmy is reading this and is upset at our stance WRT Ukraine (especially vis a vis Nazis in Ukraine):

Hi! I hope you like our humble website. I also hope our stance on Ukraine doesn’t come across as cruel, and instead it can be understood for what it is. Though I don’t speak for everyone, I would like to briefly clear up misconceptions:

    1. The belief that Nazis in Ukraine justify Russian invasion is laughable. No amount of Nazis in the country, by their mere presence, would justify the war crimes, assaults on civilian areas, further development of weapons (both conventional and hybrid warfare) that inevitably leads to both sides increasing militarization instead of funding good causes, ecological destruction, and so on. If anyone tries to justify the entirety of the invasion based on the presence of far-right elements in Ukraine, they are wrong. Plain and simple. The actual reasons why some of us take Russia’s side are fundamentally because we believe that, absent the invasion, there has already been a war going on that merited direct intervention on Russia’s side. Not just in the local context of Ukraine, but Western imperialism more generally. That is a different discussion.
    2. The relevance of the presence of Nazis and other reactionary right wing elements in Ukraine, particularly among Ukraine’s armed forces, is in the effect it has on the prospects of arming Ukraine. Objectively speaking, far right Ukrainian Nationalists have penetrated into the armed forces and the government. Giving weapons to Ukraine inarguably means giving Nazis more power, like it or not. We believe that the effort to fight to the last Ukrainian, scuttle peace negotiations, and escalate the conflict via the increase in Europe’s military industrial complex are fundamentally a continuation of the US’ strategy of using fascism to combat democratic forces,[1] which goes back to the start of the Cold War in 1917[2] with the Russian Civil War and is most clearly exemplified in CIA operations like Bloodstone, Gladio, and Condor.

        tldr then:

        • Russia invading Ukraine purely because there exist Nazis in Ukraine = not a valid reason
        • Russia invading Ukraine because of broader geopolitical context and pre-existing Ukrainian civil war = maybe valid reason, separate discussion
        • Arming Ukraine = sometimes arming some Nazis
        • … Therefore arming Ukraine = not in the interest of those who would like to prevent Nazis in Ukraine from having weapons
        • Arming Nazis in Ukraine has precedent and one has strong reason to think it’s intentional because the US has done this before

The implicit takeaway is that we should support a negotiated peace in Ukraine despite the fact it would mean Ukraine giving up much territory, because they’d lose that territory eventually anyway at the cost of more lives, more environmental destruction, and more nigh-irreparable damage to international relations and solidarity; Russia also ought to make concessions (and the part of me that holds immediate individuals’ human dignity and the sanctity of life above all else hates Russia and would like to see them make many, many concessions and pay lots of reparations, despite what the rational part feels) but ultimately those of us living in Western states may only extract more concessions out of Russia by supporting increased militarization, which obviously is Not Good.

I think you can make a much stronger argument, because it’s not merely that some of Ukraine’s armed forces etc. are Nazis, but that the government in general is openly Banderite and has openly brought explicitly Nazi groups into the military and then took its own initiatives to spread their influence by various means. The government is full of extremely self-aware and open Nazi collaborators who are happy to spread Nazism.

A year or so ago Ada reached out to us trans mods about wanting to set up a trans surgery comm to fill in the void left by the Reddit comm getting shut down. Her priority was based on maximizing traffic while we advocated for a walled off garden approach where we would vet people through our main instance for an extra level of safety and privacy. But her priority isn’t safety, it’s always been about clout for her.

She left that chat when I told her we already provide a safe space for trans folk and if she didn’t feel the same way she needed to reevaluate who she lets in to her own instance.

I am really starting to understand how revisionist history gets written and propagated so quickly.

We, as the clearly superior posters, win so hard at posting, that they have to de-federate or risk completely losing the narrative. And because we won so hard, and so decisively, we don’t really think about it that often, because we know we were on the correct side of this.

The other side, on the other hand had to de-federate to maintain their narrative, which means that the entire reason for their existence eventually becomes justifying that decision. We have to be the worst of the worst, we must have done all this terrible stuff (which they think of because they were the ones who did it), because the alternative is that they were wrong, so wrong that they had to cloister themselves away from those that were correct.

And so the weaver never stops weaving.

Like, this is some absolutely crazy revisionist history here, dear Lord. The idea that Ada ‘tried to unite the trans communities’ is such bonkers horseshit. They tried to convert the trans community here, and maybe more substantial stuff was going on behind the scenes but there was so much “Y’all must be cosplaying.” crap that was tolerated from blahaj, it was insane.

oh yea, we were bending over backwards to accommodate them and they continued to spit in our face

To me, it was shockingly disrespectful because I am one of the only long term straight users that hasn’t been banned lol, and I can tell you with great certainty, after years of posting, that the reason that the community is the way it is and operates the way it operates is because the majority of the modding team that actually controls the culture here are LGBT.

Yeah, the leftist anarchist and communist tendencies has abit to do with it, but a leftist instance run by mostly straight people would look completely different. It would look far more like r/chapotraphouse did. And while there are still elements of that culture that hang around, the idea that this place doesn’t have its own culture that isn’t specifically informed by the LGBT online experience is extremely funny.

It is because I post in this space that I can just fit in with young queer people irl. A real testament.

That I am straight (trust me I am?) or that I have been here an extremely long time and haven’t been banned (yet)?

Usually an old-head will have a crash-out over something or another, get themselves banned for abit, then come back pissed about it, and just get banned again. Some just leave. And some, I assume, account hop which makes profile recognition extremely difficult, unless someone had an extremely specific posting style (ala SevenDeadlySins or BlackMoldFutures).

Otherwise, this shit is a vibes based analysis, I don’t have numbers. As the kids would say, this is unc telling stories.

I suppose I don’t think about the sexuality of other users very often. To have the idea that you are one of the only long term straight users to not be banned seems strange to me i guess.

I know we had a demographics survey at one point. Was the percentage of users who reported themselves as straight that small?

If I am remembering the demographic survey, which is all self reported btw, so about as horseshit as my analysis from a scientific perspective, I think we had about double the national reported average (though that also keeps increasing every year) so think about 20-30% of the community, which is extremely high in a community that isn’t explicitly about that identity.

And my thing is more how prolific and involved the queer community on hexbear is in its moderation and makeup, and that they tend to stick around and post for a long time. Literally, a major strain of reoccurring moderation policy is called (half-joking but still applied seriously) TransComrade69 (TC69) thought, even though TC69 had multiple crashouts before leaving the site entirely.

The closest thing to a real deviation from that is the news mega, but even they still abide by the rules as they are set up.

I watched Ada help chase off a blahaj mod of their libertyhub comm, who then left lemmy altogether unsurprisingly, because of grail and another account. Only for those same users to start doing the same to others.

For someone who loves to say they are there to protect the community, really do a terrible job of it

I think this Korean comic explaining why historical revisionism occurs is a fun way of looking at the site drama, but obviously replace some of the wording to make it hexbear slamdunking the shit out of those nerds.

        https://asurascans.com/comics/return-of-the-mount-hua-sect-963c76c5/chapter/159

Also its my favorite comic and it’s finally come back with season 3 after the staff waged a strike against their shitty publisher, told them to fuck off, then opened a new publisher just for themselves to publish their work

lmao “conveniently miss out all the awful stuff they do”. You are so right, bestie. Now since we do sooo much bad stuff maybe you could link to some on this public forum that we are on? Surely it would be easy enough since we do sooooo much of it.

it’s been three years so i guess we can just make up whatever we want now.

I think it’s really telling how their main refrain is that we’re carrying water for supposed evil authoritarian regimes. Who are these regimes? What a coincidence they’re all the countries who have found themselves at odds with western imperialism huh weird

And their brains can’t take it. It’s staring at them right in the face, they like the white western liberal order and that is the fundamental core of their political ideology. They’ll say they don’t like the socialism of China or the DPRK, but are fine with the socialism of Sweden or Denmark. Yeah OK wow you like the white people and think the Asians are inherent despots

Like they’ve been more open about it in recent years but I wish they’d just come clean with themselves. They believe white western people do society correctly and that non-western people have incorrect genetics or a flawed culture that forces them to be evil. That’s their main problem with us.
