I cannot even fathom being a Zoomer. Millenials really had the Lucy & the football thing going with college and the job market. Zoomers came in with full clear-eyed no illusions that this is stupid. Not even like “can you see all the stuff we’d need to do to win?” it’s just “fuck you”
Or even if your education was substandard because they require teachers to buy everything in the classroom with their lmao-salary and so you just sort of feel like bad things randomly happen to you and then Andrew Tate is trying to tell you what’s up and what’s down.
When the problem was not working hard enough it was probably like struggling to support a family of 4 because you were only working 30 hours a week and spent too much time bowling and came home drunk every night. I don’t think it was ever going from 55 -> 60 hours to put away $100/mo (and, for the record, $100 meant a whole lot more even just 5 years and profoundly more 50 years ago, so if you’re like 20 then what the fuck is even going on for you?)
So I’m a zoomer (yippee) and let me tell you I don’t know a single person my age who considers retirement or home ownership a part of their future. It is just so painfully obviously out of reach and to be clear these people are in college or have a degree. Most of them do not consider kids a feasible choice for both financial and moral reasons. The ones who want kids always preface that dream with “one day if I somehow get rich”. I know a handful of people who have admitted to looking for a relationship out of a desire for financial security at as young as 21.
Even the people who were born lucky, the one’s from money I mean, are concerned their ability to achieve what they want will fall away from them.
Zoomers don’t care about work ethic or decorum because there is literally no incentive to do so.
I didn’t even touch on the ecological despair but it is endemic.
You’ve summed it up well, everybody our age knows the system is a failure. Its just a matter of if that sends you into hopelessness, some reactionary orientation, or if we direct that energy into organizing and liberatory action. It’s such an uphill battle though
Honestly its why I get very annoyed when people complain about zoomer work ethic or "kids don’t care about school anymore’ no fucking shit! They don’t even have a carrot. The stick is wrapped in barbed wire and a electrical coil.
An important reminder that the Capitalists aren’t a monolith. Some are well educated on the system they run and fully understand what can cause it to collapse. Others are just nepobabies with 0 understanding of anything who are only out to enrich themselves short term and have no interest in trying to maintain the system because they don’t even understand the concept of it needing to be maintained. And these two groups are often at odds. And even within those two major groups there are many overlapping subsets of people who want different things. They appear united to us, because when capital is threatened they close ranks to protect their own, but they probably hate each other more than we could imagine.
Everybody want peace. Most inteligent ones from their side just want reaching it on good terms.
Their logic: Why sharing power with a non rational mob? A system not based on reason will inevitably fail and a new form of neoliberalism may rise again
