In both the original and the remake the beginning up until they leave Midgar is so good

Don’t get me wrong, the rest of the game is good too, but the game shines the brightest when it’s about ecoterrorists fighting Shinra

The whole dirty 90s neoTokyo cyberpunk aesthetic is a vibe too

Wall Market aged poorly though.

I love, love, love the beautiful hand drawn backgrounds in the original game, and I am still genuinely shocked that a game as successful and mainstream as FFVII has ecoterrorists as heroes and that the game opens with them literally bombing a power plant. I also really enjoyed remake, if only because it looks amazing. Sure, not everything in it has aged well, but we could do with more art that says “actually these corporate mofos are the problem”.

The game tries to subsume Barrett about it with his lines to the effect of ‘I was just mad when I blew up the sector it was wrong! people died!’ but it falls flat imo. Hard to deny that blowing up a mako reactor was the right move, plus the music bopped niko-dance

The immense backgrounds when climbing the debris back to the top side floored me as a kid. As an adult, the remake’s backgrounds floored me again. They did such a good job of modernizing the scene without losing the character of the originals.

I mean, the first disc is for sure the part of Final Fantasy VII. Can’t deny that. :)

Wall Market is a lot and some of it can deal lethal psychic damage but the forcefemme and yaoi undertones (overtones, really) I gotta support. I wouldn’t change it even for its faults.

I don’t end up missing Aerith when she gets borderline-fridged though. The game has not done enough to earn my sadness and she kinda feels like a weight on the plot when Cloud and the gang could be doing other things. So I mean, yeah, disc 1, pretty chill.

I don’t understand your question but I find it disappointing that the ecorevolution kinda gets pushed aside because there is a cosmic level threat that transcends class politics. I haven’t played the original, only the remakes. I found it hard to follow what was going on because half of the second game is cutscenes where Cloud hallucinates Sephiroth.

A lot of fans feel this way. Midgar is very fleshed out and believable while the rest of the world is just like meh. And speaking of the wall market, the english translation really kind of hamstrings parts of it, like the honeybee inn and it’s like cat-confused what the hell is going on?!

Wall Market is supposed to be pretty gross and offensive though? I thought that was kind of the point? Like the whole thing is a reference to Harijuku and Las Vegas, which are areas that have some things of pretty poor taste.

That said, yeah, not exactly a huge fan of when the Kaijus show up, but considering what happens in other FF games, the story is practically straightforward.

I mean, the cosmic conflict directly generates out of the actions of the evil corporation, you are basically fighting climate change as embodied by a seven foot tall man with beautiful gray hair.
