I think this is why road rage is so prevalent
Everyone is scared and knows that if you get into an accident, it can ruin your life
But because we live in a profoundly unhealthy society, that anxiousness gets translated into anger at others rather than (correctly) realizing that shit is fucked up
Driving, especially in heavy traffic, turns me into a different person. Normally I’m pretty chill, understanding of people’s mistakes, to err is human and all that, but put me behind the wheel and that patience & understanding goes out the window. I notice I’m more impatient, less understanding, and less polite when I’m driving.
I try to avoid driving as much as possible. Sure walking and biking have their own downsides (earlier today I almost got hit by a car while I was crossing the street again) but overall I feel much better minimizing how much I drive
Driving really is the League of Legends of reality. Just partaking in it makes people worse.
I remember my first road rage incident because a guy in a lifted pick-up tried to run me off the road, so I basically ended up goading him into racing me for a half-mile
Ended up coming back to my senses and just going home
He went speeding off down the highway at 80+mph
Hope he enjoyed burning that dozen gallons of gas
Refer to my scientific paper on the topic https://hexbear.net/comment/7394003
I honestly don’t do road rage, I just get very internally stressed and then make dumb and sometimes dangerous mistakes. Which then probably causes road rage on fellow drivers.
The circle of life
Yeah this is why I don’t drive even though i have a license. I actually legit just choose to walk for hours instead because i get so stressed when driving i physically lock up
Yeah it sucks, I wish society didn’t force us to drive basically everywhere
I’ve come to the same conclusion about road rage. For me I hallucinate too much to feel like I can safely drive. I fear I might swerve or stop suddenly for something not there, but I’m really afraid I won’t and it’ll be real.
I’m just very anxious in general, so I had to take defensive driving courses before I felt safe to drive
One of the unexpected perks of living somewhere where public transit actually exists is that even in cases where I have been in a car, it feels like people are a bit more sane. People who really don’t want to be on the road don’t have to be. Down South (in the US), it’s like, even if you get your license revoked, you still gotta get to work somehow, and it’s so car dependent, what are you gonna do? That’s to say nothing of the reduction in traffic. The fact that public transportation makes such a big difference even for people who drive everywhere makes it so much more ridiculous that it’s so sparse and underfunded.
I think driving a car is another form of capitalist, class society’s in general, way to isolate us and alienate from us each other. Driving a car is so alienating from other forms of transportation, you essentially stop caring about any human or non-human animal, just like how lawns are essentially alienation from collective nature of gardening.
Yeah driving should only be a licensed activity conducted by people who are personally interested or do it specifically for work.
Fuck this capitalist hellscape.
Driving tests should be much more rigorous, the only reason they’re so lax is owning a car is the default in most of NA & you have to minimize barriers to the main mode of transportation people use
Plus how goddamn profitable it is to basically force most adults to buy a vehicle that needs constant fuel, maintenance, oil changes, etc
Driving tests are famously hard where I live, and yet everyone drives like shit🤷
yeah just about everybody can pull it together for the hour or so it takes, if there’s neither infrastructure or organisational enforcement of traffic rules it doesn’t stick
it makes sense to me. The car people are very rich and use their power to ensure their richness and car dominance at the expense of people’s livelihood.
Lots of stuff like that where the alternative would be cheaper/ better for society is not implemented because it would mean the rich faction of that particular thing would get less money.
Nah, depends where you live. Beeing poor but Beeing able to get to work somehow are not a consideration to ponder about. But yea society can be built to encourage public transport. Or semi public even . If I was to design a city I would just have a huge parking spot outside and free transport from there.
It fucking sucks that driving, yes fucking driving, halves my commute time. Absurd.
I just got an e bike that matches my car commute time on the heavy traffic days and it’s been amazing
Living in a place with Good Public Transport™ that’s still true. But fwiw a bicycle is almost a quick as a car.
Yeah, in the city it’s not “just as fast” but faster. But outside town? I am fucked.
I think it’s odd that absolute trip time seems to be the dominating factor around this. Like if you’re out of options, you’re out of options, sure. But if you can, for example, use the 45 min train ride to do work which you couldn’t on a 20 min drive the slower option gives you more time.
It’s a big part of why I commute by bicycle. Sure I could shave off 20 minutes of time per day commuting if I used a car. But then I’d lose out on 40 mins of exercise which I need if I don’t wanna get all depressed and sleepless.
Sure that a thing when cycling but I don’t actually value the experience of commuting in a crowded train or bus very highly.
I was literally in a car crash today. Dumbass wrecked the entire side of my car. Fuck driving.
It makes perfect sense when you recall GM, Ford, and Goodyear lobbying against public transit in favor of selling their products.
Who Framed Roger Rabbit was right
Lobbying? They went as far as purchasing the privately owned (L) public transit companies they could and de-fund them to hell
Yep.
One thing I loved about living in a city a long time ago was not having to use the car. But for 90% of my life it’s been a necessity. I wish it wasn’t but that’s the way it is. Just planning for transport without car takes same time as going with a car for me. Not to mention the travel time. I don’t use the car much, and try to do everything when I do. But it’s not possible to live without.
Half-baked mini-trains you have to pay constant attention to otherwise they’ll go off the trackless paths, or hit another mini-train, or even a pedestrian (they go on the same paths as people trying to walk?? What??)?
Motherfucker I don’t have time for that I have books I need to read on a real train

You know what is horrifying? He is just talking about UK numbers. The US is something like double the second highest number of car deaths. I have the study somewhere in my bookmarks.
Also I did like it and am currently sharing it everywhere in my discords lol
No to Forced Mobilization! Get it?

I mean even if this weren’t true I would still believe it if a gay vampire said it to me
