Really demonstrates the place Arnold used to hold in US culture that he could make a movie about him getting pregnant without losing machoness.
Yeah I feel like the 90’s is when Arnold films started getting meta. The post-Arnold era, if you will. He started getting more into comedy and/or lighthearted films, or Last Action Hero that was more of a commentary on the action genre. Even stuff like True Lies was a bit more self-referential as opposed to the more direct action roles of his 80s films. Some of his 80s films are fun but I definitely prefer the self-awareness of his 90s stuff more.
Maybe his more “human” role in Terminator 2 vs Terminator 1 was also an example of this.
Arnold himself grew as an actor and perform (I think because he got more comfortable speaking English), so the roles he was cast for got more depth to them. In the 80s he was a big action figure directors would get to pose and look badass while doing one liners with an Austrian accent.
In the 90s writers could kind of trust Arnold to deliver comedy lines and hit the delivery reliably. There’s so many 90s Arnold movies where he’s supposed to be just a guy while he struggles to walk without his clothes exploding, and that already sets any “normal person” line he drops to be funny.
Quaid, get your ass to the delivery room!
