I was in an argument just yesterday on the “not having enough kids” subject where people were insisting that younger generations are choosing to live in “expensive places” and that they should move to “cheaper places” so they can start families. As if the idea of abandoning their lives, careers and friends to go live out in the boonies in order to provide a bare-minimum QoL for their family is going to change any dual-income-no-kids couples’ minds.
There are no cheap places to move. In the USA, anyway. Anywhere that has “affordable” homes has no jobs, so they’re not actually affordable. And employers are getting harder about remote work. It’s very frustrating because I would happily move to a “less expensive area” but I can’t afford it 😂

I get what you mean, and agree, but want to point out that at least in a sense, it is because of the price tag: the cost to the environment and to others, in the form of water use, land use, carbon and methane emissions, etc. Internalizing those external costs would make beef cost more money at the point of sale.
Not just water use, but the run-off gets into our fresh water and makes it be not fresh.
Capitalism will make vegans of us yet.

I actually agree. Eat less beef and more vegetarian meals. I ate beef today but I also had vegetarian meals 4 days in the last week
It’s not hard to have a vegetarian day. Think about it: on any given day maybe you have oatmeal or cereal for breakfast, then a PB&J for lunch, then all you have to do is have a CBR burrito for dinner, and BAM, you’ve had vegetarian day.
I’m also not 100% vegetarian, but I try to be more often than not. Because of various compelling reasons.
It is a lot easier to commit to being a sometimes vegetarian than to give up all meat cold turkey. Eating less meat is better for health and for the environment
Edit: I do want to also acknowledge though that if someone is reducing their meat consumption, that is great too. Any effort helps.
This isn’t necessarily true. I’ve seen interviews with plant-based health coaches who’ve talked about adherence being better when people do jump all in with a plant-based lifestyle. That’s what worked for me too, partly motivated by what I saw in documentaries about factory farms and slaughterhouses, and partly motivated by seeing my own family members die from preventable diseases way younger than they could have lived. Our choices have consequences, so there is urgency.
I went all in for as long as I could, messed up, then immediately tried again and pushed for even longer. Eventually something clicked in my mind and I knew, “I literally don’t even need or want this.”

Do you want to know why corn is subsidized? When mexico was producing good corn at a good price many years ago, they were undercutting US cereals for livestock growth. The US basically said, fuck mexico, and just paid the farmers to grow corn in the US just enough so they could sell their corn at a slightly lower price. It devastated Mexican farmers who had built a system of selling corn to the cereal grain hungry US. My native Mexican coworker told me in great detail about that one.
