By the time you’re an adult, the bulk of the responsibility for being a hateful bigot lies with you. They know it’s wrong to be homophobic, racist, sexist, transphobic, etc (as the vast majority of them indeed are). But they’re too in love with the idea that they’re better than the people they look down on to admit it, and are also completely comfortable with the idea that they can be “forgiven” by Jesus without ever making things right with the people they hurt, or even asking forgiveness. Yes, these megachurches play a part in spreading the hateful rhetoric, but let’s not give the grown adults who follow their lead a pass on their awful behaviour.
